My SLK 200 Kompressor Upgrades

Hi,

Here I'm going to report my 2004 SLK R171 200 Kompressor changes and modifications.

1) My first mod was the antenna, in 2004 as soon as my car was delivered I went out and changed the antenna to the SL one... That proved to be a disappointment. The SL antenna does not work well on the SLK.

But I really don't like the SLK antenna and assembled a Brabus solution... not very good if you ask me, but I don't lessen to radio very much.

Here is a solution for the problem: http://www.slkworld.com/diy-section/...mod-171-a.html

2) The next upgrade was the AC. I installed a Thermotronic HU in 2005 and and is working like a charm since then.

This is a Plug n Play thing, you connect it and it calibrates the air flaps and it is ready to work:

But I was not satisfied it as one problem no sun sensor and as I live in Portugal the sun can be very strong and the AC does not correct automatically because it thinks you are driving in the night.

So I started investigating, disassembled the area where the sun sensor seats but no connections... ok, that wasn't going to stop me and I made a cable to connect it:

All set and today I was set to do it...

But wen I disassembled the HU connector I noticed that the cables ware there!

OK this is good thing but were is the connector? Dissembled every thing:

And there you are!!!!:

behind the glove compartment and going back behind the cup holder!!!

It is a 3 cable set, Orange, Green and Brown+Yellow:

Reassembled every thing and now I have a sun sensor!

I checked and the connection for the Polution Sensor is there also, probably will buy it.

The part numbers are:

A 211 830 04 72 - Pollution sensor
A 171 830 02 14 - Fixation for the pollution sensor
A 171 831 06 59 - Sun sensor

I don't remember the PN for the fixation for the sun sensor...

I also changed the Central Air Exit on top of the dash board:

A 171 830 08 54 - Central air exit

3) New Audio 20 (NTG 2.5) and Ipod - 1st This is valid for European SLK only, US have different connections.

Done on 3/2009.

I ordered a cable set from http://www.kabeldaviko.de/r171-w211-adapterset_ntg.html.

Here are some pics of the audio 20:

This unit costs new around €600, from MB Dealer.

But as some people are upgrading to the Comand NTG 2.5 there are, from time to time, some nice barely used units on ebay like this one.

In ebay they are selling from €200 to €300, mine was €280.

My A25 is A1718704294 as you can see in the picture. It’s not the last model. But there are at least 4 different part numbers for it since it came out… Probably SW revisions. And CD Changer option.

About the microphones I already have a UHI phone in this car so it is possible to use the same microphones.

The CDC in the glove compartment, forget it... the new audio 20 CODE 523 does not have optical connectivity MOST (the 510 does), so the old CDC is gone. (now I have a glove compartment).

The part numbers: (there are new part numbers)
  • CODE 523 is A 171 870 42 94 (MB Audio 20)
  • CODE 510 is A 171 870 43 94 (MB Audio 20 with CD Changer)
Now I had to clarify one thing... what kind of ipod kit must I buy? And were is it less expensive?

The ipod kit does not use the MOST connection:

"The Mercedes Benz iPod kit is a sort of kludge that connects to the Auxiliary input of the stereo system (for sound) and uses the car's network (Canbus) to display information on the instrument cluster and read the steering wheel controls, as oppose to other audio devices like phone and CD changer that connect to the audio fibre-optic network called MOST.

There are various iPod kits for the different models but basically they contain the same basic parts.

Each kit consists of an iPod control unit, a cable from the iPod control unit to the iPod, a power and audio cable, a manual and some mounting hardware."

in http://www.mercupgrades.com/What+is+...rticle-46.html

My ipod Kit came from www.comandonline.co.uk
http://www.comandonline.co.uk/produc...cat=279&page=1

Also bought the ipod cradle from MB dealer.

Now you have everything needed:
  • A171 870 42 94 - Audio 20 HU without cd changer (optionally A171 870 43 94 Audio 20 HU with cd changer)
  • B6 782 45 01 - ipod cradle
  • B6 782 45 02 - ipod kit (SLK-R171 MY2009 facelift)
  • NTG 2.5 cable kit (NTG 1 to NTG 2.5 converter + bluetooth antenna + microphone adapter + antenna adapter)
The iPod kit contains contains the flowing items:

B6 782 45 29 - iPod-Interface
B6 782 45 30 - iPod Amplifier NTG2.5
B6 782 45 31 - Wiring Harness iPod (connection to ipod)
B6 782 45 06 - Wiring Harness iPod (connection to HU)
B6 782 45 07 - Owner's Manual iPod Interface Kit
B6 782 45 08 - Operator's Manual iPod integration Kit
and some pieces of Velcro and felt.

The iPod Kit

The setup

The NTG 1 to NTG 2.5 converter

About the microphones: The cable supplied by Frank does not attach to the mic connector so I very carefully opened the connectors and took the contacts out, and swapped the contacts to the existing connector as follow:

The green goes to the (2 on 1) blue wires and the black is just shield it does not connect. the other two red wires go to the brown and white.

And by the way, you don't need to take the central light off...

I faced a antenna problem, the HU have 2 antenna connectors, but only one is working and the cable supplied by Frank is he wrong way around. It is a known problem and by the help of fellow Adamantium it was solved: "You can't connect the aerial double fakra (white) the wrong way round. You need to open up the fakra connector and move the aerial wire to the other side. ie. to the side with the connector release tab on it."

FAQs:

Is it going to work on my 2004 R171?
Yes, but it needs some adapters as the pinout is different, the antenna connector is different, you need also to connect to the Head Unit a Bluetooth antenna and the microphones.

Is my UHI Phone Cradle going to Work (option 386)?
Well as I learned so far, it still charges the phone and the phone connects via Bluetooth… so you can say it works as you have the same functions as before.

Is the Bluetooth going to work?
Yes!!! And it is perfect!

Is my 6 cd changer going to Work? Is mp3 available on de CDC?
Nope, there is no MOST (optical connector) so it is virtually impossible to connect it. There is a New audio 20 with CD Changer integrated in the HU.

Are there any more cables needed?
The cables needed are the following: NTG 1 to NTG 2.5 adaptor, antenna adaptor, Bluetooth antenna, microphone extension cable. (if you don´t have microphones you need to get 2). And the iPod kit for the NTG 2.5.

Is it going to be ipod compatible?
Testing, as far as I tested it works perfectly when the key is turned on, whiteout the key turned a strange thing aspens, the iPod starts to go mad between play and pause and no sound comes out. If you turn the car on everything is OK and works fine.

Is the color of the dashboard exactly the same?
Yes a perfect match.

Ok, now I'm going to change to Command!!!

Yes it is true, I love the audio 20, but I "need" navigation, and a good opportunity came around...

I'm posting some pictures as I go along.

I'll be selling my audio 20 soon.

5) Upgrade for the Comand NTG 2.5 - In progress

It should be very strait foreword as the connections are identical to the New A20 I have already installed.

There is one thing missing, the GPS antenna, this I'm going to tape it to the interior of the instrument cluster bay as recommended by MB. I hope the GPS antenna fits...

At this time I'm waiting for the HU... The car is already dismantled waiting for the Comand unit.

EDIT: The best solution for the antenna is this - Genuine GPS antenna extension cable

The GPS antenna does not fit that location...

Found a nice spot on the middle of the dash board.

And it is done!

It is Plug n' Play after after the A20 (NTG 2.5) upgrade:

And you need to activate Navigation on your cluster:

It is fantastic navigation!!!

Regards!

Hey Caboz... I've tried installing a comand 2.5 and it locked on me with a pin (theft protection system). What's the year of your unit? 2009? 2010?
If it's a 2010, how did you get it NOT to lock on you?

Thanks!

The rosette for the 810 climate option is part number A1718310559. It does come with the I/R sensor.

What Caboz is calling a "pollution sensor" is actually a moisture / dew point sensor, and the correct part number is A2118300572. You should not need this, as it's present on all cars with A/C, not just the 810 option.

Life is good - enjoy it with the top down!
