Looks like it might be straightforward!

I've got a few other things on my list first, but this looks like one i'd be able to do myself!

Did you have any thoughts on where you're going to put the light sensor Savcom?

Thanks Dez

Life's been busy the last few weeks (daughter getting married at end-Oct....) but I hope to get a chance to look at this on Saturday. (I'm hoping to actually DRIVE her for a change on Sunday!!) The plan is to come out between A-pillar and dash, but we'll have to see if this is possible.

I will be writing this up too, with part numbers etc. and hope to get this as a DIY thereafter.

Well, I'm not quite as far as I'd like to be but we have progress. The unit is wired up and operational. The 'headlamp' is a 12V LED and the unit flips on if I hold my hand over the sensor and switches off five seconds after the sensor sees light again. if I wave my hand over the sensor so light goes on and off the sensor the LED stays lit.

Looking good. Next step is running it in the car off the 12V auxiliary power to see if the logic and sensitivity is OK.

Well I've been doing some research regarding the lighting controls in my SLK and it seems all the lighting is controlled by the Lighting Control Unit, N7-1. From what I can gather:

There are no relays involved because that would defeat the headlight bulb failure detection built into the N7-1.

Any relays I add to switch the lights on and off automatically will interfere with the bulb failure detection.

I would therefore need to bypass the lighting control unit to switch the headlamps on automatically yet provide a dummy load to defeat the bulb failure detection.

I also need to consider how to make sure the light switch continues to function as this will be needed at night. Also the lights would need to still comply with MOT testing policies here in the UK.

Doing this would require additional relays and load resistors and would complicate the design. I'll work out what is needed as the next step and present my design in this thread.

It may actually be better to look at other headlamp controllers from other Mercedes models to see if something can be done with a lighting control swap or looking inside the unit and adding some logic within the unit.

Happy to hear other people's views here. Have you played with the lighting control module? Have you added relays of your own?

Thanks.

Here is the fuse list for the fuse box on the N7-1 light module:

Fuse Box N7-1.pdf

And here is part of the N7-1 wiring showing the headlamp wiring from the module to the headlamps themselves.

Wiring.pdf

It's the wiring diagram you need - but see above - it's probably not so easy!

Auto and Follow me home lights

I know this isn't a w208 forum, but I have done this in a clk 200 kompressor (w208) a few days ago, next (maybe this weekend..) is to do the same in my r170 (slk 230 compressor).

Instead of buying a kit, like valeo, build my one, and it works like this:

1- if it's dark, and you unlock the car, with remote, it automatically turns on lights for about 10/12secs (using the timer from dome light), then it turns off itself.

2- if I'm driving and it gets darker or go in to garage, with low light, etc.., it turns on the lights.

to do this i use 3 relay's (separate lights, from right and left, and not overload the relays), several diodes (to keep all electrical apart from the car, when I switch off this system), a ldr module (like the ones showed here or can do your own, plenty of ldr diagrams on net), and a few wires.

in w208, every single lamp, have it's own wire:
one for the low light, one for the presence light, on the rear two lamps, two wires, the lights on the license plate one wire each, multiply that for 2 (left and right), one wire for the acc+, and add another wire the illuminate the cluster. For what I see r170 headlight switch, has much less wires than w208.

in my case I add two little switches so I can control how it works:
- one cuts off all this system
- the other switch only cuts off auto light when driving, and want to use headlights switch .

the headlights use positive + to work, the dome light, has always positive on, and cuts the negative, took me a while to figure out how I was going to do this, to work for both scenarios using only one light sensor, but it comes out very simply in the end.

the ldr module had a small trim pot to adjust light sensibility, I put mine inside the dome light (w208 has a big dome light compared to r170) but will go in very similar way.

Will post a scheme and some fotos (for the w208, but I will post too, when it's finished for the r170.

hope it helps more people doing this.
