Default Tyre pressure help!

Hello everyone.

Picked up my 2007 slk 280 on monday and already got some beautiful 18" wheels on. Looks great. Thanks for everyones help with that. Will get some pics up asap!

I have 18 inch wheels with with 225/40/18 and 255/35/18. There fullrun tyres and i set them at 34 - 36 psi to start with. All was good until i went out in a very heavy downpour and the back end kept slidin not even going at high speed. According to their website they recommend 42 psi. That sounds a bit high to me. What pressures would you recommend?? All the wheels are 8.5" if that helps. Look forward to a response. Thanks for your help.

James

Tyre pressures are determined by the axel weight of the car.
The tyre pressure for the SLK is in the petrol flap, so set to what it say in there.

If you fitted 16" rims or 18" rims the pressures are still the same.

To improve the "grip" try lowering the rear tire pressure by 2 psi and see how it handles. Military vehicles can lower their tire pressure "on demand" when they are on the sand (desert or beach).

First, I'd be leery of tires designed and produced in China.

One example, there is a small margin between the recommended (42 psi) and max tire pressure (49 psi) (7 psi delta). If the tires are at 42 psi cold, your bound to be close or reach the max psi when the tires heat up causing failure.

Be careful.

34-36 psi seems about right, 42 sounds too high when the recommended tire pressure for the SLK is only from 32 to 35 psi. It might not be tire pressure but the tires (brand) itself. The Chinese are not known for making tires.

I'd agree with everyone else that the problem is almost certainly the tyres rather than the pressures. I know someone who bought some Chinese tyres; he won't be doing it again ...
