blauplunkt makes a subwoofers that are nearly 2 inches wide. They are called the overdrive series. Check those out, they run like 200 a peice, and are available in both 10's and 12's. And they sound pretty good. I was debating about throwing one in my 171 somewhere....

Just speakers covers show. All still in the same plane as before . False panel just evens out the convoluted space behind the carpet trim. Bazzle

If we combine the 2 recomendations by Bazzle and Baron in here, that would be 2 subwoofers in the spaces behind the seats with false panels. Do you guys think that will be a little too much? Will just the speakers do the job? Or it depends how much bass we're looking for? Bazzle, how do those speakers change the feeling of sound in your car? Is doing the false panel an easy job for the Audio guys? Thanks, Eric

Easy kob. You b\need to open panel behind seats and you will see. Just seal around odd bits with HD foam and glue. Mine are full range, as I have a 4 channel head unit standard in OZ. Sound stage is not too bad as front to rear have slightly differing bandwidth so sound moves nicely. I have no woofers but the door speakersd and these add enough in for my taste. I dont know the specs, prob 100w peak. Bazzle

Keep in mind if you're going to use the OE deck/amplifier you'll need to find 2 ohm speakers. I found this out the hard way. I installed a couple Blaupunkts in the doors I had left over from the last tour to Germany, the sound was awful. I quickly realized it was because of the impedance mismatch. 2 ohm speakers are hard to find outside of OE Bose. IMHO, the system sounds great just as it is with or without the top down.

First of all, I want to say I don't know much about Car Audio System. I had to learn a little b/c of this car! I want to share my plan with you folks: 1. Get a line out from the door speaker 2. give it to a line converter 3. from line converter to a 4 channel amp. 4. Then give 2 of the amp channels back to the door speakers(they can handle more power) 5. give the other 2 amp channels to the subwoofers/speakers behind the seats. I'll have to decide between subs and speakers for behind the seats. The amp itself will have to go either in the auio gateway space in the passenger foot-hole(it's empty now since I don't have HK system) or next to the speaker/sub behind a seat. How does that sound to go folks? Any advice? Eric

i believe the 10 inch, blaupunkt sub has like 500 watts rms. Which is pretty serious that close. there wattage rank is also a true rating, so it would be like 800 or 1000 on other brands i believe. I think if you mount one sub in lower center, and put some 4" speakers on each side, integrated with existing sound system, it would sound great. Side note, ive been considering puttin those same subs in my slk, but cant do it in the cabin .

I think you're right Barron. Maybe I should just put some full range speakers behind the seats, like what Bazzle did. Do you know what brand has very thin speakers? Bazzle, I'm just a little worried this midification might limit the space behind the seat and make it difficult to move the seat back. Any word of wisdom? Eric

Eric, you shouldn't have any trouble with clearance unless you sit with the seat back angled parallel with the back interior wall, AND with the seat just about all the way back.

Excellent. Now the problem is finding the right Amp, speakers and installer! I am thinking of a 4 channel (40W each) amp, in combination with 6 3/4 inch full range speakers with RMS of 40W. What do you guys think? i want the speakers to be as shallow as possible. Any suggestions? Eric

| It really depends on how much money you have to spend. If money isn't an issue I would replace the speakers behind the seats with anything. Remember that those current speakers are "free-air" which means that when you drop the top you probably lose ALL of your bass because they are not in an enclosure. If you find a good stereo shop like I did you can custom build kick panels down at your feet under the dash and the bass will be 10 times better, tighter and when you drop the top you don't lose anything. Components: Alpine IVAD310 with the DVD/NAVigation module BatCap Model 400 (For power...no added car battery for extra power......400 Peak Amps for 8 Seconds) JL Audio 6W0 6 inch Sub x 2 (Replaces sub behind each seat) JL Audio ZR650 - CSI (6.5 inch (160mm) seperates) McIntosh MCC446 6 channel amplifier 110w x 2/55w x 4 (Less than .005% THD) Amp/Crossovers and Batcap is mounted in the "Hole" in the trunk with plexiglass cover so you can see in. Also the amp is sitting on risers so when you look into the trunk it will look as if the amp is "floating" in mid air. The place in Tampa, FL who did the job is "Sensous Sound Systems".

Wow! You rock dude! That's one serious system! Well, I guess I failed to mention that I have a 2005 SLK 350 with Audio 20. So, I don't have any speakers/subs behind the seats right now: I will have to build them! That's why I am trying to keep it simple. with only adding an amp and 2 speakers behind the seats. I just hate it that there is NO sound coming from behind in this car. I like the footwell-kicker idea though. Does it limit the foot space at all? Any sugestion on how to find the thinnest speakers? Eric
