| I've been trying to find a list of lap times where our SLKs and their competitors are put next to each other under reasonably similar conditions. Such a list is here and here's my excerpt (sorry about the formatting, the spaces for aligning the columns get erased upon posting): 70. Mercedes SL 63 AMG 1:15.3 ´08 525 / 1895 76. Porsche 987 Boxster S (291bhp) 1:15.6 ´06 295 / 1355 77. Porsche 987 Boxster S (276bhp) 1:15.7 ´05 280 / 1345 85. Mercedes SL 55 AMG 1:15.9 ´06 517 / 1960 90. | Man, I knew that the R171 was faster at 0-60 than the base Z4, Boxster and TT when it first came out for the 2005 model.... but the competitors quickly caught up, and the Z4/Boxster have always been well-known for their handling prowess anyway. But it's nice to see the face-lifted R171 do better than the base Z4/Boxster/TT on a track! ![]() I see that the SLK55 AMG is bested by the Z4 M and Boxster S, but it would be interesting to see what the SLK AMG BS can do against the others. ![]() No surprise with the SLK280 being at the bottom of the list... heavy and underpowered... did they even try the SLK200 (European) model on the track? ~shahedc . |

In terms of power, it's not even that bad if you look at the excerpt, but the weight is clearly on the porky side. It's not all that bad, though. After all, the complete list goes on to number 388 and the SLK280 leaves behind some worthy adversaries, some with a better power-to-weight ratio, like a 2001 BMW 330i, 2003 Audi A3 3.2 quattro, 2001 Mercedes C 32 AMG, 2002 Jaguar S-Type R, 2004 Mini Cooper S Works, 2003 Bentley Continental GT. Another interesting factoid is that the facelifted SLK350 leaves behind a 2007 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster. | |

| Another interesting fact is that my favorite car of all time, the Porsche 993-based GT1 is the fastest car ever recorded on that track. Same holds true for the 'Ring, last I checked. That GT1 was one badass car, and it only had 600bhp. Never understood why Porsche changed so many things when they moved to the 996, the 993 is still the best car they ever built. And arguably, one of the best cars anyone has ever built. |

| Don't take it personally. ![]() I was merely comparing it to its primary competitors and its beefier versions. Very cool... I have been eyeing AM cars as of late... never driven one before (yet!) |

| Nuerburgring Nordschleife times: Fastestlaps.com Wikipedia Supercars.net On all lists... 1) the GT1 does not show up. I assume it's because it didn't run in the production car version (there were less than 30 of them). 2) The LF-A time does not show up or is listed as "unconfirmed". 3) There seems to be disagreement about the definition of "production car", but by either definition, the GT-R is not the fastest one. What's truly puzzling about the GT-R is that the next car with a similarly low power-to-weight ratio is far down the list. Either they severely underrate the power, or they have set a new standard in terms of handling and powertrain efficiency. I assume it's a mixture of both. |

| I love how the Porsche 911 in various forms just dominates that list. Every list, actually. The Ruf RT12... what a badass car. That's just a Carrerra that RUF beefs up a little bit. They go conservative with it and end up with 650bhp. No other company in the world produces track cars as good as Porsche, and that includes Ferrari. 911s are such supremely impressive cars on a track, and they can be beefed up pretty easily into serious race machines. And all that with a simple V6. That's what is most impressive - how many other V6's do you see at the top of that list? The 911 is still running only 3.4-3.6L displacement (depending on the model and mods), and easily beats up on the most exotic V12s in the world. And you can still get 24mpg from one, or take it to get groceries. |

| Yeah, I really meant 6-cyl... so used to the V-designs for 6 and 8 cylinder engines that I just automatically say V6 or V8. |
