new car: delivery check list

i am abt a month away from taking delivery of my new car, and was wondering whether you might be able to refresh me on the subject...
any older threads with a check list? have tried the search engine, but failed really...

some silly questions also for you guys:
how long is long enough on taking delivery of a new slk?
should i really make a meticulous check of all items, or should i just trust the ad and shorten the delivery ritual? what's your experience?

Check the hood near where the windshield wipers are. Make sure there's no scratch on the hood line where a unknowing person may have lifted the wiper arm while cleaning/prepping the car and then scratch the hood (usually 2 cm long).

The usual checks on the electrical system: lights, turn signals, COMAND.
Roof operation.
Abscence of idler pulley noise (with engine hood/bonnet open) when car is started.
Check lower surface of the front and sides of vehicle for scratches.

Eddy's right here mate, just give the bodywork an inspection and have a look under the hood for anything obvious then checkout the electrics.

Thats about it really but what i would do is make it clear to the dealer that you a returns option (most give 30 days) because its not fair to judge the car entirely on delivery since components will need time to get into good working conditions for example the engine might sound a little rough initially but it should sort itself out fast.

Make sure you look at the hood where the wipers are located, sometimes the dealership workers open them in a wrong manner and they start to scratch the edges of the hood where it contacts the windshield.

Key area for me would be paint and bodywork. Dents, dings, damage, or repainting.

Benzworld.org has a really long checklist, I never did checked my car, got it, was really happy, got all my paperwork, keys, etc.. and took off.

See pix below, I've attached blue masking tape to the areas that may have scratches from wiper arm being lifted while washing/prepping the vehicle (the one on the right side is more common):

the more i think about it, the more i realize, i'm not the ''take the check list in the hand - sit tight for 5 hrs - check all'' kind of guy, so i think i'll just take a look at some basic stuff, bodywork, electrics, roof operation, engine noise, complete the paperwork and take off (and hope that all will be fine)...

Not related to checking the car but should be part of checklist:
Burn favorite songs in MP3 unto DVD or CD. Don't forget to take with me when I go pick up the SLK.

Folders and songs within folders (no subfolders as these mess up the COMAND when loading, i.e., takes too long to load when there are subfolders).

I am mentioning this as they scratched mine and I didnt notice it tell later on so thats an indication for all members who are getting new cars to check, because when you receive the new car you will be so happy that you might just forget about these few things.

...that's true mo, but what do you really do if you notice minor scratches say from the windshields, refuse to accept delivery?

Two solutions:

1) Touch up
2) Repaint the whole hood.

Then why not go to the dealers as soon as the car arrives before they do PDI to inform them about this thing, so that you are able to reduce your chances of this thing occuring.

I did this with the delivery of the SLK55, emailing the salesperson to let the prep department know. I forgot about checking it on delivery and noticed the small nick (less than 2 cm) at the right side later. It happened anyway despite the advance notice.

Anyhow, it can be touched up easily and the nick is soon forgotten.
