Default Garage Door Opener Mod

I'm not sure what the 171 has in the way of a factory garage door opener, but those of you with the 170 more than likely have the little buldge in front of the rearview mirror with an LED and 3 buttons.

I used it in the States, but when I got here, I found out the frequencies weren't compatible with euro openers and the euro spec 170s did not come with this option. So, buying a compatible PCB was not an option.

So, I figured I was out of luck until I resently replaced the garage door control module in my house and it came with these tiny remotes (smaller than the key fob).

I'd had the interior windshield cover off before and knew there just had to be enough room behind it to mount this new remote and be able to utilize the factory garage door opener.

Below are pics of what I did, I thought you guys might enjoy the pictorial. CLICK the pics to enlarge.

The 2 PCBs on the left are the guts to the factory opener, the other is the remote PCB with the cover & battery next to it:

This is a close-up of the remote PCB where I soldered to the micro switch:

I had hoped to be able to plug the original remote module in to the 12V supply so I could still get the LED to light up, but it interferred with the operation of the piggybacked remote, so it's unplugged, but everything else works like a champ!

Can the garage door opener be retrofitted to the R171, if so how easy, costs and part numbers please?

Okay, I'm confused (as usual ). The first picture says TWO PCBs on the left. I see one PCB and some sort of connector cable going to some sort of black thingee with wires coming out. I get that those wires go to the little remote PCB. So I assume that when the original button is pressed, it is sending a signal that causes continuity across the original switch. Is that right?

I think the small PCB is the guts from inside the blue "clicker" the black piece is the underside of the benz switch contacts, and the large PCB is the Benz clicker brains.

the black wire was added to short the blue clicker guts button that was programmed to the garage.

My bad, technically, the "2 left PCBs"are one if you count the ribbon cable as being an intgrated part of the 2...I didn't.

Exactly.

Electronics aren't predudical ... they just want to be able to go somewhere and do something.
