Just made a appointment with my dealership, they
say it's going to be $149, i asked them again, they
pause and say yes, $149. I have a slk55, I thought
I am going to pay $300+...guess i will find out Friday
if the deal is real...this dealership is in LA.

I had service A performed on Saturday. It was $202. About two weeks before I took the car in, I got a letter from the dealership stating they were reducing the cost of many service options to help customers with the rising cost of fuel. I really don't know if I benefitted from the cost reductions, but I did expect that service A would be more. I have to take my ML in this coming Saturday for its A visit, so I will try to remember to ask them about the discounts.

All Merc do is sell you a car that will either be defect free or will have any defects to the original vehicle components repaired for a reasonable amount of time, its not up-to them to ensure the car is kept in good working order thats down to you.

It would be like having the contractor who built your house coming back every few years to decorate for free, its not his responsibility.

Can use the same example for the warranty really, say your 3 month old roof caves in over your master bog and leaves you with nowhere to crap but the lawn you can expect that the contractor will fix the roof.

BUT if the same thing happens after 200 years its already had a good life and he can't be expected to fix it for nothing, just like if you add some additional wiring and set your house on fire he can't be expected to fix it for free.

Just like MB can't be expected to pay for issues causes by aftermarket parts.

i understand dan, but im just saying, that i dont get why Mercedes changed there policy to charge for service, for example on my Dad's S55 since it is an 05 model year any service whether it be A,B,C or E...is done free of charge. in the E500 since that is an 06 it is subjected to get charged....i just wish they had left it the way it was before.

As a wise MB sales manager said to me: It's a warranty not a garranty! But it helps to have the backing of a good dealership.

MB managed to include the service before 05. It was something that was distinctive about the car. Now that they have all the diagnostic stuff built into the car, etc. , it should cost the MB shop less to repair than in the old days.

I can only guess that MB was tracking what they shops were doing and decided they were getting ripped off by the shops. Now they put the burden on the customer to watch out for being ripped off.

Just my guess...

I think it has more to do with keeping the price of the cars the same while the US dollar has become worth less, labour costs have gone up, and dealership repair shops have gotten greedier.

Cyber's right here, while I'm sure shops where charging MB a lot they are a big company so i doubt it bothered them that much.

Thing is that was only available in the US and paid for by MBUSA by adding some extra cost to the cars, now we are in a situation where stuff is getting more expensive they are going to ave to cut away the padding to keep selling cars.

$149 is NOT TRUE...
it' still $280 for AMG version...

by the way, I got one flat tire on the way to dealership, they charge me $415 to replace it....
So it's $700 well spend morning for me.

it's in Ferrari service cost range...

Update:

Service A for non-AMG SLK is $149 (initially quoted to me when I went in for service A today), service advisor called later and said he misquoted forgetting I had the 55 AMG. Service A is $208 after taxes.

Double checked with parts department: apparently Mobil 1 0w40 and Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W40 are now used on AMG engines (probably just a US thing only). They used the 5W40 this time. No overfill warning. Also checked the level in the service menu to make sure before starting the engine.

Also had the following done without charge:

1. Roof seal lubrication and adjustment of the front roof latches to eliminate some (minor) squeaks on going up and down the driveway and speedbumps. Service done according to TSB listed here (actually I supplied the TSB number). Seals were cleaned and lubricated with the special lubricating agent.

2. Rear fog lamps were coded so that both sides now light up instead of only the left side (for US spec R171). Service record just mentions generic rear SAM version code check (to avoid getting charged for the service). Thank you very much Dan mate for guidance on telling the tech where to look for the code, and to those that posted their experience of getting both fog lamps to light up.

Note: SmartTop was deactivated before service and reactivated after service.

Using DAS (MB computer program), the right side rear fog lamp (passenger side for US spec) can be enabled via the driver SAM control unit options (as given by Dan mate ).

On the work description it states:
Customer states passenger side rear fog light won't light up, cause: 54590908,

541011 Perform short test
540992 control unit ..... code (after short test)

Manually reset rear SAM version coding.

Service advisor did mention as a CYA that he's not sure if this complies with Calfornia DMV codes, etc, etc (disclaimer).
