Default Mercedes Benz DSG is coming...

...in 2009. An excerpt from the following link:

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/08/o...3-and-sl65-am/

...The big news with the new SL63 is the addition of Mercedes' seven-speed twin-clutch SpeedShift MCT (Multi-Clutch Transmission) with four drive modes. Shifts with the MCT are promised to be smoother, faster and more fun overall than before. Fun's good... Providing the direct feedback of a manual transmission with the total convenience of an automatic, the new seven-speed MCT with AMG Speedshift is an all-new design available only in the new SL63 AMG. Featuring seven speeds, four shift modes and a double-clutching function, the MCT transmission offers impressive versatility and even faster shift times.

At the heart of the new AMG Speedshift MCT seven-speed sports transmission is a new start-up clutch, which runs in an oil bath and replaces a conventional torque converter. Thanks to its low rotational mass, the start-up clutch helps the transmission respond instantaneously and dynamically with no slip.

Fitted with four drive modes: "C" (Comfort), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual), the transmission provides customized shift control for maximum driving pleasure, and does so with no interruption of power.

Very good news! Hopefully 2010/2011 SLKs will have the new transmissions available when my lease is up in June 2010!

Not old news, more news - more detailed description on the new system in the above post, instead of just a name.

That would be great! But I don't think I could justify/afford a new AMG at my age (turned 20 in October.) It would likely be a 350 with the new transmission or a CPO AMG55.

R171 won't have it, you need to look at 172

Sign me up for the SLK63 AMG R172, cancelling my idea of a Porsche 911 or other cars.

Small car, 450hp NA with DSG and same weight as our r171, I cannot wait.

Sounds fantastic. Maybe it won't get all bloated like a bunch of the other cars in the market after a full model change.

Wow, that's great to know MB has finally offer a MCT (DSG) for their line of cars!If it handles well. it will give a good match to the Bimmer and Porsche.

It's great hear about good news like these... at the same time, many of the W204 and W211 owners complaint about the lowering quality of the brand. Is there, really, a demand on this product -a double clutch system- in Mercedes owners?
Reading this forum, I appreciate most of you would prefer a manual transmision AMG...

You bet! Once you've driven a car with a multi-clutch transmission, you won't want that 7G anymore.

The DSG was the first transmission I've run across that would make me consider dropping the manual transmission from my must-haves list. I'd still rather have one, but I could definitely live with a DSG-like system. It's still less fun to drive, but it's much easier to relegate a job to a machine, once you realize that it is better at it than yourself.

I would easily trade up to a DSG type tranny (need a test drive but it sounds like an amazing unit) in an AMG SLK, if and when future budget allowed ..
