I discovered this forum while searching for information about the 2001 SLK320 that I just purchased. I am a long time Mercedes-Benz person, since 1968 owning 2 190SLs, a W113 280SL, and 4 240Ds. These cars are different. For openers, how does the engine cover come off so I can have a look at the air filter(s)? Looking forward to some great exchanges of information.

Regards to all,

Hi Marvin,

welcome from Germany!

Mercedes experience since 1968, that's a wide range. That year was my first year in school.

Regards
Bernd

Thanks for the rapid replies. With the earlier cars, I could look under the hood and everything was right there. Not always easy to get to, but the components were distinguishable, one from another. With the newer cars, I open the hood and see a bunch of black plastic, with a cover over the engine! I have to live with this thing for a while. I feel like I've been dragged kicking and screaming into the era of automotive electronics. But so far I'm pleased with it overall. It's a very nice car.

Default Welcome

Welcome from just south of Cincinnati, Ohio. As you can see, all who have responded have the R171 model. There are lots of folks with the R170, so the question about the engine cover should come soon.

Earlier life: 1966 Datsun 1600 Sport, 1972 BMW 2002tii, 1973 Volvo 142e, 72 Datsun 240Z, 72 Mercedes 250, 73 BMW 2002, 73 Datsun 260Z, 73 Volvo 164e, 71 BMW 2800cs, 77 BMW 320i, 82 Mercedes 300D, 84 BMW 325e, 86 Acura Legend, 90 Miata, 00 Acura TL

A car is an expensive PITA; get one you like.

Never tried to take that off my SLK 320. There probably is a discussion of taking off the plastic for the R171 as several people have broken the clips. Do a search and see what you turn up. You may also want to "ask Dan" as he is probably familiar with them.

Welcome from northern CA enjoy the ride, I never had the cover off the 171 or the 320 but Dan should be able to give you some directions.

It is gratifying to receive greetings from all over the world. Apparently Dan is the fellow with the answers. I will try that. Thanks to all.
