MB keys allowed in carrry-on baggage?

What with the new rules on airline carry-on luggage....will this prohibit us from carrying our Smart and Keyless-Go keys in our carry-on baggage? Key-fobs are banned. What about our MB keys?

Are there any UK members who can answer this with respect to flights out of Heathrow?

Following this morning's police operation, the Department for Transport has asked all UK airports to apply additional security measures designed to ensure passenger safety.

Hand baggage restrictions:
These measures will prevent passengers from carrying hand luggage into the cabin of an aircraft with the following excepts (which must be placed in a plastic bag):

pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards, identity cards etc (not handbags));
travel documents essential for the journey (for example passports and travel tickets);
prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (e.g. diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.
spectacles and sunglasses, without cases.
contact lens holders, without bottles of solution.
for those travelling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and
sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags).female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels and wipes).
tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs
keys (but no electrical key fobs)
All passengers must be hand searched, and their footwear and all the items they are carrying must be x-ray screened. Any liquids discovered must be removed from the passenger.

I always thought a key fob was something that attached to the key. But, I guess this includes our keys that have the in-built battery. WOW! Most car keys of any make are of this type. What a pain! Who wants to check their car keys?

easty's right corkscrew mate MB keys are a no no at the minute, a mate tried to fly out with one and was not allowed to carry it on with him it's fair enough i guess.

I think they should ban babies. they could cause harm if you swung them by the legs or use them as a missile.

ok joking obviously.. but still noise cancelling headphones are the best invention since sliced bread. hehe

One thing i have always wondered with the Keyless-Go keys that transmit constantly would that not be counted as RF interference like mobile phones?

I just hope that this is temporary. Otherwise I'll have to FedEx my keys ahead.

Do the Keyless-Go transmit always or do they 'respond' only when near the car? How long does the battery last?

I've seen some with a button. Not had chance to see any new ones though. The freq is quite low on these things 300-500hz, so power consumption is good. unless your pressing the button all day or the kids are playing with it. which could be a bitch if it uses the pseudo number generator and the click it over the buffer.

I next to never push any of the buttons on the key. It is always in my pocket so the only time it ever responds is when I am at the car. I really don't know if it is actively sending anything or if it is just acting like a mirror and just reflecting waves. I am not an engineer (obvious).

I guess your right easty less power than a mobile so dont pack as big a punch.

Corkscrew i am sure its temporary mate but i can understand the need for it at the moment, the keys transmit and the car listens the majority of the time the places switch for certain commands easty must be right again with the power consumption theory of his as the battery's last ages on mine.

I don't have kids of the button is only used when i want to see flashing lights thats like every 5 Min's cause i am childish

Hi I just joined. This looks like an interesting forum. Got my Pewter SLK280 3 weeks ago,750 Miles on the odometer. Love it! Can't wait to get on the gas. The dealer talked me into Lojack. I also have Lojack early warning (useless! dosen't work until you drive about 40min) Big mistake for nearly $1000.00 could have put that toward an SLK350. Anyhow. does anyone know if the Lojack Fob as well as the Smart Key ban applies to US Domestic Flights?

I am not familiar with the Lojack system but if the fob has a battery in it then its banned from coming to the UK anyways no idea about anything else

Congratulations Gayle 280. What interior color did you choose to go with the pewter exterior? You can post pictures at the vBGarage section and add a little narrative if you wish.

It sounds like you have the LoJack with the special key option (separate from the MB SmartKey and why it's $1000 and not $600). This is where LoJack is activated if the SLK is driven off without being unlocked by the SmartKey or towed, and is more than a certain distance away from the special key. The dealer did not recommend this to me and states it's only useful if you're in San Diego or in the border states, where the car can be stolen and brought south of the border in a short time.

As DanSLK said, if the key has a battery or some sort of transmitter, then it's banned for now.

Corkscrew mate like easty says if its got a battery its going in the hold i would not try and argue that point at check-in if i where you they will more than likely show you the door
