IIRC, this is not a unique thing. It may cost you quite a few pennies to get another SmartKey -- this may be the newer model with chrome accents.

Open it up as far as you can, don't touch a thing, and stick it in the freezer for a couple defrost cycles (24 hours should be plenty). It'll take out all the moisture, so long as you haven't shorted anything out yet. Normally i would rinse it out with alcohol first, but i don't know if the rubber buttons will survive.

Try playing dumb with service rep, they will sometimes exchange under warranty (rare).

Yeah I think if you have to get a new key now they only have the new chrome clad ones. My buttons were starting to crack on the one I use everyday and they replaced it under warranty. Said it was usually caused by women with the fingernails but that didn't seem like it would be an cause for me. Anyway now I have a 3lb key but it is new and shiney and more impressive to your friends but I don't feel it contours to your hand like the old one. Think this was covered in another thread so carry on.

I hope the freezer trick works for you.

Ok, it's in deep freeze now...will let you know if it works, or if I need to "social engineer" my service department.

PROTECT those key fobs. I recently replaced one, about $175 with shipping. FYI, you can't buy one used or new online. They have to be coded.
