From a game industry newsletter I read occasionally...

The impact of Sony PlayStation 3 owners participating in Stanford University's Folding@home project has been noticeable--the program's capacity has doubled due to PS3 owners contributing their consoles' Cell processors to the program. Folding@home aims to utilize civilian processing power to assist in the analysis of protein folding, which could aid in curing diseases. "Thanks to PS3, we have performed simulations in the first few weeks that would normally take us more than a year to calculate," said associate professor of chemistry and Folding@home program lead Vijay Pande. "We are now gearing up for new simulations that will continue our current studies of Alzheimer's and other diseases."

Thats great, Imagine if they write effiecient folding apps for the new DX10 PC gpu's like nvidia GTX8800 and ATI R600 that will really make it fly as there much faster than what a PS3 has.

I'm tempted already I'm already drawing too much power out of my entertainment unit with the xbox, xbox360, WII, PS2, and PS3(I'm a collector, and I can't afford to collect cars like some of you :P) all connected up.. granted I don't have them all on at the same time, but if I had the PS3 on all the time, might have heat and noise issues, so right now I only turn it on when I'm actually playing a Blue-Ray or game. Is tempting though just to see how fast it churns through the WorkUnits.

One machine certainly can't take the credit for my work units... I currently have 3 machines crunching numbers 24 hours a day. I'm about to spin up two more, methinks.

I added two boxes tonight and will have two more by Saturday. Very cool initiative. Maybe our site FAQ should mention this is a member initiative right in the top.

Some of my boxes are working on slices that won't complete till May. Too bad they don't have this for the Xbox 360.

Fruzia family is me, SLKman.

I like the certificates that you can print out. They look nice framed up and hanging on the wall. I am actually using only 1 of my laptops for it.

I figure the kido's can hang'em high in their rooms and even in their future offices at work.

Awesome, looks like the PS3 is working it's magic. congrats

Cold shot - Don't take any notice of the fist estimate on a WU it always gives a way off date comparing to actual finish date. later WU's will be more accurate.

Doug, your flying helicopters. we all no there''s something not right about people who do that. no need to explain.

this may answer a little

"Folding@home is run by an academic institution (specifically the Pande Group, at Stanford University's Chemistry Department), which is a nonprofit institution dedicated to science research and education. We will not sell the data or make any money off of it.

Moreover, we will make the data available for others to use. In particular, the results from Folding@home will be made available on several levels. Most importantly, analysis of the simulations will be submitted to scientific journals for publication, and these journal articles will be posted on the web page after publication. Next, after publication of these scientific articles which analyze the data, the raw data of the folding runs will be available for everyone, including other researchers, here on this web site"

the WU is just the data that the application downloads in which then it processes. 1 WU is just 1 job. once the WU has been processed then it's uploaded and another is downloaded.

someone specifically is not working on your machine, the scaremongering here is not appreciated as people will easily shy and if they read things like this and that statement is quite stupid. the application is just a software package that processes huge amounts of information. and then uploads this back to a server for the folding team. there is no access permitted or known security issues with installing the software. security has been explained a few times in this thread.

the points are awarded per individual and per respective team, it's just to add a little competitive fun to the whole thing. any more queries don't hesitate and thanks loads for playing if you choose.

Doug, distributed computing is just as the name implies. The problems that we are trying to solve are huge, complex and processor intensive. They are usually tackled by huge super computers the size of large houses. Since time on these systems is extremely expensive, this ingeneous method of harnessing the idle time on thousands of personal computers (yours and ours) was developed. Quite impressive really. SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Life) was one of the first successful uses of the distributed computing model. It is quite safe, and really does help scientific endeavors. Please feel free to join. It's safe. I have it on four systems, and three have already submitted results. The SLK Team is now in the top 4,000 teams, and moving up.
