I have a couple of questions about mirrors, if that's okay. I have a need to research the rear view mirror used in the SLK and wondered if anyone had pictures of it, ideally from the front, side and top or bottom and details on whether there are different models (basic, auto dimming, homelink) or if all cars share the same one.
I'm also interested in photos of the back of te SLK looking back from the cockpit both with the roof up and down.
I should probably explain my reasoning for this, as a hobby I've made some bits and pieces for my car and I'm wondering if it would be viable to do the same for a friend of mine with an SLK. I fabricated a mount for my radar detector so it is in the back rather than on the windshield and also integrated the display for the detector in to the mirror. I can't get to his SLK to nose around and may make him some pieces as a suprise.
A source for a reasonably priced rear view mirror would also be most welcome!

I will try to take photos of the R171 and post it here in the next few days, probably this weekend, as there's less daylight at the moment. Hopefully someone who owns the R170 can post theirs.

Thanks, that's very interesting. It proves there is space inside the mirror and that the rear is accessible so it's certainly viable. If anyone with an SLK is interested in pursuing this shoot me a PM. I should stress this isn't a business, I've made a couple of these for people and I'm always keen to try a different car. I think the detail in my etching speaks for itself hopefully, if you want to give it a try the first step is for us to get hold of a spare mirror to work on.
As for stealth mounting the actual V1 I happen to have some ideas for that but need to see the rear of the SLK. I've made brackets for a couple of Porsches to mount the V1 in the bacl near the wind deflector, is there any space back there in an SLK where we might put a bracket? I'm also testing a fabric cover on my V1 at the moment, it isn't 100% stealth but does protect it from prying eyes (although in the rear it's pretty much out of sight anyway).
