Default Bluetooth

First, I am new to the forum, so bear with me, I don't know a lot of the technical subjects for my SLK 350. I was looking at the MBUSA site and decided to look at options. On Step 2, I can choose the P1 package and the hands free communications system. On Step 3, the hands free communications system is listed with different criteria in order to use. I am confused...are these the same or is there a difference? If there is a difference, could you let me know, because I am confused. Thanks!!

Hey SLK girl!! I can't help you with your question I just wanted to welcome you to the forum. So...WELCOME!!

Someone will be along shortly to answer your question...and you're more than likely to get a handful of welcomes as well.

Congrats on your purchase...or future purchase. I'm assuming you haven't bought yet as your looking at options right now.

I think Step 2 is referring to what used to be called "phone prewiring". That means the car should have the wiring and microphones, etc. needed to use the phone system you choose. Step 3 is saying you can either connect to that wiring via a Bluetooth puck that will communicate with your Bluetooth phone, or you can buy a puck that is specific to a particular phone.

I have the Bluetooth and if your phone has that capability, I recommend that. With the Bluetooth, when a newer phone comes out that has new features you want and also still supports Bluetooth, you can just pair it with the puck and you are back in business. With the specific puck, if you get a new phone, it probably won't work with the puck. And at best you will have to buy another puck.

One disadvantage of the Bluetooth unit is it doesn't charge your phone whereas the specific puck also charges the phone.

Now in order to be charged, the phone has to be plugged into the puck. Not having to plug in is another thing that is nice about the Bluetooth puck. When I get in the car, the phone and puck communicate with each other without my having to do anything. Otherwise, I would have to pull the phone out of my pocket, open the door to the center armrest (which has been notorious for failures) and then plug it into the puck and reverse that process when leaving the car.

Not sure where you are located and that can make some difference too as Europe models are different from US models.

Hope this helps and welcome to the forum.

Oh, and if you go to www.wireless4mb.com you can look at the various phones that are supported as well as the Bluetooth unit. I'm not even sure MB even has the phones and pucks anymore. If you get the bluetooth one from wireless4mb, you just slip it onto the connector that would be under the armrest if you get the phone pre-wiring.

And another note, if you don't get the phone pre-wiring when you order your car, it is prohibitively expensive to add on later.

And another thing , I would recommend getting the COMAND system with navigation. Then your phone book shows up on the console. Not sure how well the phone works without COMAND.

Ordered a Parrot CK3000 Evolution and the steering wheel harness today. It should be in my car by this time next week. Cost for parts was about $349.00. I was advised to purchase steering wheel harness #146 by the company rep. Will let everyone know if it works with my phone.

welcome slk girl.
Those parrot phone kits are a great bit of kit. I know a few people with them and they all swear by them to be the best aftermarket bluetooth phone kits.
good luck with the car...stick around slkworld and i guarantee you will learn things about your car you didn't know yet.

Welcome SLK_girl,

Have fun with your new car!
I'm just past the run-in stage with my SLK200 and though it may not be as quick as most of the owners in here, I just love the sound of the supercharger "whistling" when I go for a blast!!

mtiede, your post was a good one, thanks!

I hate to sound pessimistic, but $349 sounds a bit steep for just parts. How much was the steering wheel kit? I'm seeing the Evolution for as little as $100.

You are correct in that the CK3000 is around $100.00. The steering wheel harness was $176.00. There was also tax and shipping in that price. The labor will be around $100 to $125 (using the last time I had a stereo and bluetooth installed in my old SLK). Right now, unfortunately, my ride is in the shop. Went in to have the Ipod dock installed. A cable is missing from the wiring harness. Now the service manager is afraid he can't get the cable needed. The car is still at the dealership, "put together enough to drive..." I chose to keep the loaner car another day.

Hi Slk_girl!
Just wondering how your bluetooth install is going. A 2-part question for you (if they finished...). Do the buttons on the steering wheel work now and does audio/music become muted?

Thanks!

I've also completed the Parrot Bluetooth installation. To answer your questions, yes, the steering wheel buttons function (two of four) and the radio audio fully mutes during use. I completed the install about three weeks ago. I did a full tutorial on a SLK installation for cars with the Harnom Kardon amplified Command radio system. The Audio 20 harness install is different. Check out this link: http://dz1.homestead.com/ParrotBluetooth.html
Regarding the steering wheel buttons, the "answer" and "disconnect" buttons work fine. The volume up and down don't. Parrot Kits suspected a bad harness between the SW100C steering wheel controller and the Parrot kit. I have a new harness, but work demands have prevented me from installing. I'm happy with the system and will swap the new harness as time permits.

Bad weather has prevented getting the Parrot installed. I plan on having it done February 2. Will let everyone know how it works.

Excellent "How to" Don!! Seriously, very nice!

Now, I just need to find someone who did something similar with the R170. If not, I may pirate some from yours as I install mine and do a similar one for the R170s.

I spoke to Howard via email and he insured me the install for the R170 was pretty much plug and play...we'll see.
