Default Boxter S vs SLK350

At the lights on a straight flat + early corner, killed it on the exit, then we both braked from 120km/h - 0. I was clearly 10 meters from the behind the final stopping distance of the boxter S.

If it was, the Boxster S driver was either useless, or he wasn't trying.

ikarus - i dont think so... he has a 350, not a 280. a boxster s has a 0-60 time of around 5.2 seconds or so, while the 350 is like 5.4 seconds. But that's just what is posted on the website. They also say the SLK 55 does 0-60 in 4.9 but people on this site have hit 4.3 second 0-60 times. i think the slk350 matches up well against a boxster s... just my opinion

The Boxster S has 295hp and weighs almost 250 pounds less than the 350. All else being equal, the 350 won't have a chance. The margin should be almost as big as between the 280 and the 350. That will only change with the 350's 2009 facelift, which should make the cars about even (assuming Porsche doesn't counter in time). A few quotes:

Edmunds:
Quote:
The last Cayman S we tested zoomed from zero to 60 mph in just 5.0 seconds and covered the standing quarter-mile in 13.2 seconds at 105 mph. The previous 280-hp Boxster S, could not keep pace, but now the Boxster S should be clicking off very similar acceleration times.
Car and Driver:
Quote:
Our 2007 Boxster S ran from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 13.4 seconds at 107 mph.

No, what the OP is saying is that the 350 had superior cornering and braking ability over the Boxter S -- not 0 to 60 acceleration.

And if it were a matter of acceleration, we have to assume that the Boxter S driver knew how to maximize his/her 6 speed manual. With the 7 speed auto, it's easy. Just hold the shifter to the left (on a left hand steering car) for a second, and floor it. It will shift at or near red line. With a six speed manual, it takes no small bit of skill to get all the engine has to offer. One missed, delayed, or mis-timed shift and you are dead -- even against a theoretically slower car.

No way! A stock Boxster S will outhandle a stock SLK 350 any day. It's only because of its excellent handling that the S manages to match the time of the SLK55 around the Ring, even though it's short on horse-power. The 350 won't stand a chance.

Ah, yes, such is so -- but only if the Boxter S driver knows what he/she is doing.

True that. The driver is still the most important factor.

Dolebludger, re your comment "With the 7 speed auto, it's easy. Just hold the shifter to the left (on a left hand steering car) for a second, and floor it. It will shift at or near red line". Are you saying the trans will shift automatically at redline in the manual mode? I'm assuming I will now be in first gear after moving the gear shift to the left....

Yes, after holding the shifter to the left, the car will start off in first gear. I don't know what would happen if the mode were set on "comfort". In that case, it might start out in second. I don't know, because I never use the comfort setting unless there is snow -- and then I don't use full-throttle starts!

Gayle:

Yes, it is a fun feature that produces much better 0 to 60 and quarter mile times and speeds than Mercedes claims -- even for the SLK 280. But I don't do it often these days with $4.00 per gallon gas! But in a 280, it will produce 0 to 60 times that are way sub-six seconds.

Just for fun, my wife had a drag race on a secluded roadway -- only to 60 mph. She drove our SLK 280 and used this method, and I drove our Honda S 2000 with six speed manual. Now, I've had the S 2000 for seven years (and 30K miles) so I do know what I'm doing with it. Know what? She won!

Dolebludger, can I just ask for a bit more clarification? I'm new to this vehicle.

As I understand it, in M mode there are no automatic upshifts, so I assume you're talking about driving in S mode, correct? And the feature you're talking about is what the manual calls "Shifting into optimal gear range".

So, with the transmission in D, you hold the left shift paddle or the stick shifter to the left, and the transmission downshifts. Then you floor the gas pedal, and the vehicle will accelerate through the gears, shifting at or close to the red line - is that right?

That sounds like a lot of fun. Unfortunately my car's in an airport parking lot at the moment - I hope it's ok! - but I'll be trying this at the earliest opportunity.

Default Clarification

By way of clarification, what I mean is this. With the car at a stop, pull the shift lever to the left and hold it there for one second or more. Then, when you start out, the car shifts at or near redline automatically into each gear.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe my car has a manual mode, as I don't have a sport package or AMG package.
