Default SLK > than others

I thought I would share this...

My daughter started the second grade a few weeks ago. I, along with countless other parents, follow the slow moving parade of cars through the parking lot. We eventually get to the drop off area. To assist parents, the school empowers 5 & 6th graders to open doors, unbuckle seatbelts, and help children out of the cars. Well, there's quite a few people with nice rides. I recall seeing a new Cayman, C6 Vette, Boxster S, and 335 convertible to name a few. Funny thing, everytime I pull up, the 4 helpers rush over and fight to open the door. They actually run away from others and come to my car instead. I can't say I hate the attention, but I do feel a little guilty about the preferential treatment.

I normally wouldn't share a story like since I don't like to boast. However, in this case it's different. I believe this is one of the perks of owning an SLK vs the others. There are so few out there that owning one is almost exclusive in my area.

Car and Driver did a review back in 2005, where they said: Moreover, most passersby were awed by the AMG roadster, wondering, "How much does that cost, $150,000?" Hmm, a Corvette never produced a similar effect.

To this day, that still holds true.

Yup, that SLK is a looker. Although the SLK has been around for years, in many areas, they're rare and unique. I rarely see many R171s, but I do see R170s on a regular basis. Yesterday, I was beside a white SLK 230 in stop and go traffic for about a mile. Top down, it stood out in the crowd. I enjoyed looking at it from all angles in the crawling traffic. My wife says she get positive comments on her SLK all the time. I've had my share of replies at stop lights. As a car enthusiast, it's nice that others appreciate our SLKs.

While they may not be the fastest, or best handling, they are the best lookers.

I get people thinking its 100G car all the time. And like said before, Im the only one with it, besides the occasional passer by. There are 2 in the towns on each side (one in each town) and i have talked to them, but they rarely drive it.

That would make a good thread ...but I can't start it since I don't have a picture...

You should start "Show your car from your office window" Thread.

Course I would have to park on the roof of the parking garage to see my car from my office window on the 13th floor.

Yeah, I must admit, it does feel good when others check out the car. I get a lot of oohs and ahhs from the kids in the neighborhood. Every once in awhile, my wife and I swap cars. Occasionally, we'll follow eachother around escorting the kids places. When I'm the trailing car, I notice a lot of people looking, pointing, etc. I think my wife gets much more comments than I do. . What's up with that? Well, she is better looking than me...

Sadly, we get no second looks around here. Our MB dealer is the largest and most successful in the US, and there is one on every block. We can't go 5 minutes without seeing a Lambo, Ferrari, AM, Porshe, Bentley, etc. No matter...we love it. Just got back from a 2200 mile jaunt through CA with her. Tearing up the PCH to Pebble Beach at 80 to 100 with the sun setting on my left was amazing. It's why we bought this little beauty. Looked at a used Ferrari 355 for 98K yesterday and just said no. Just love this little bugger too much. Enjoy your accolades and second looks, because some of us are a little jelous :-)

On the weekends, we see some exotics but probably not as much as what you see in Scottsdale.

However, the thing that's so great about the SLK is it can be a daily driver. I'm sure those Lambos and Ferraris are only taken out in perfect weather, on the weekends, and for just a few miles. Even if I had an exotic, I'd still want something like the SLK that can be enjoyed 24/7/365.

I went to a local burger place a few months back. As I stood in line for ordering, I see a c6 Z06 pulled right up and parked next to me. The guy (mid 40s) stared down my car and walked in a few spot behind me in line. A family of four ahead of me were looking out to where our cars were, and the dad turned to me and saids: "that's a beatiful car" he started to ask me all kind of questions and then his boy (11/12) saids "I want that.." The Vett's owner looked a bit irritated. And then, the kicker, a group of teenagers walked into the store raving: "that benz is sweet", "damn", etc, and then one of them ran outside and snap a picture of the slk with his cell phone. He didn't even so much looked at the Z06.
I see the vett's owner looked around a bit and then walked off the line and left. Maybe he forgot his wallet?

Nice one Lizard! That's classic. Although I really do like the Z06 over the standard C6, I think most can't even recognize the difference and totally dismiss it.

PS. I think your story is exactly what Car and Driver were talking about.

The Z06 has the same failing the Caymen has. Permanent Roof Syndrome.

Let's face it, a good coupe is menacing on the track, but put the top down and *** appeal tripples!

I thought it was funny because there were about four open spots in the lot right infront of the door, but he parked right next to my car which was off to the left corner of the store front. Perhaps he thought it was a chance to one-up on a mercedes? It was classic.

Y'know, we have our fair share of exotics on SoCal, but the SLK 55 still brings a lot of looks. Most people think it costs around $100,000, in one instance some of my buddies/neighbours where sitting on their custom choppers (probably worth $35,000+ each) next to my car and saying i could trade my car in for 3 or 4 bikes....i didn't say anything!

i WOULD like a ducati...but that's another story.

I was at a party with someone who had a Hummer. I showed him the SLK (I wasn't interested in his Hummer). After he saw it his question was, "How much did it cost? $80,000?". He was pleasantly surprised at the price. Joked that he might get one.

while there's no doubt that the slk is a great looking car in any of its forms, the fact is (imho) that your car, dsb, is without a doubt one of the best looking slk's on the road.

I have to admit even in the most evil of moods, it still makes my day when people say 'nice car' even after they just ticketed me.
And I can usually park it in someone important's spot when in a rush, because they think someone more important than them owns it.
And My stepdaughter usually won't ask to borrow my car because she thinks it cost a fortune.
The MD in my office constantly has to look away sheepishly when he complimented on his car in the lot.
