Default New Personal SLK Speed Record

My daughter is here visiting from Chicago. Last night after dinner, I suggested a quick ride at sunset in the SLK. She has not been in the car yet, and the night was perfect for some top down driving. 85 degrees, calm and a beautiful sunset over the desert hills.

I headed North up my favorite two lane, and - knowing Nicky likes speed - I wound it up to about 121. But after the u-turn to head back to the house, the road just completely opened up. Not a car in front of us.

I punched it and wound it up to 142 before I saw a horse trailer up ahead. Would have taken it to the limit if not for that glue hauler. Nicky was thrilled. She came back in the house, told her husband what just happened, and I had to listen all night to him asking to be with me when the next record falls!!

Man, I love that car.

AWESOME! Didnt the car feel rock solid!? I hit my governor (155) once in the car, and to be honest minus the wind whurring by from having the top down, the car didnt feel like it was going more then 70 or 80. it was just, .....solid. Anyway congrats!

It is a thrill to see someone experience a new thrill. When I took my first wife down the 1320 in the Nomad the first time, she couldn't talk for nearly an hour. The 427 roared, the front tires came off the ground and when the chute opened seconds later at over 160 mph...The first time I drove a pro car,, what a gas...Sore for a week but high for a month. All this in the late 1960's, now 320mph is common, can you imagine 320 mph in 4 seconds...... You are the man Cold Shot.

It was VERY smooth and solid. Even with the top down. And this was not exactly a perfectly flat road. It has a few bumps, dips and inclines. I drive 70 to 80 MPH everyday, so this definately felt faster. More like 110 or so, but not the 140 we were doing!!

Good for you ColdShot!! I remember the first time(s) I hit 140 and 150 (R170 top speed), felt almost not real. 110 - 120 is almost an everyday occurance now. I have to if I don't want to get run down in some places.... I use the words "have to" loosely.

asked my buddy.."I clocked you doing 140mph on the exit ramp of the freeway! What the heck you think you were doing?" My buddy said.. "Slowing down!" LOL

As fast as I drive to work at 4am, I REALLY need a Valentine1. I have been VERY lucky in the last year or so.

The traffic average is 80-100mph most mornings unless we are following a cop into town on his way into work, then we usually run a steady 80mph behind him.

Houston Freeways are pretty much Racetracks!

120mph my sustained top speed until we passed a cop. He did not come after us. We got lucky that time!

I look forward to the day I can open it up to full speed!

I hear you. I had front and rear detectors built-in to my Lexus, with indicators for each in the guage wells. I have been thinking of getting the Bluetooth Calibre K40 for the SLK. I like the idea of no wires, and might opt for the laser defuser as well if they can mount it behind the front grill. I don't like front plates or frames on my cars as they ruin the look. Unfortunately, this seems to be how most laser defusers get mounted.

Anyone have the Calibre K40?

Shot for 150 again this morning on my way to work, hit 145...kept it for about 3 or 4 minutes 'til an E class changed lanes on me. Guess he wasn't paying attention to his rearview.

Didn't have enough unrestricted real estate to try again.

Nice!

Followed my Motorcycle cop buddy in today. Arg! I have seen him a few times on the road on the way to work. I know he is headed into work but I don't want to chance passing him. (No one else on the road passes him either! LOL) At least he does a constant 80 mph so it ain't too bad.

Kevin, How many miles of unrestricted road do you get to drive each morning???

Yeah, probably not a good idea to pass him when HE'S doing 80. Might push his "OK, I'm not doin' you a favor drivin' fast anymore" button...

There's a nice 12 mile stretch of unrestricted A6 between Grünstadt and Mannheim. Depending on the time of day and day of week, usually Sat or Sun morning, I can let her go without any real issues.

While reading this thread, Mrs F remarked on a story about the local garage owner when she was a kid: Sybill Lupp. First kiwi female A grade mechanic and racing driver. She only did Jags (pity). Sybill used to get factory vehicles from the UK, drive them once, then tell her mechanics to do all sorts of stuff becuase they weren't going fast enough; this was a women in her 60's.
She got caught on a long straight stretch in NZ (Foxton Straights) doing 230kmh (limit is 100k, strictly enforced). She went to court for this and was facing a loss of license, when asked bythe judge if she knew what speed she was doing, she replied "of course I did, young boy, I was braking at that point!" Didn't lose her license and the case against her was thrown out. She was close to 70yo at that point.
