| This isn't really a kill story, just thought it was the most appropriate place to put it. I'm on my way to work this afternoon and I'm being a law abiding transplant in a 100kph zone (about 60 mph) and this black debadged SLK (R170) flies past me. WHAT?!?! Oh no you don't! Not wanting to feel left behind I took of after it. Then, we hit the unrestricted zone....that's right! So, we're flyin' past cars @ b/w 120 and 140 mph. Keep in mind, most everyone else is driving b/w 80 & 100, so we weren't really being reckless. But it had to look cool 2 SLKs playing cat and mouse at somewhat high speeds. We even happened upon another SLK (silver 200), but it didn't join in the fun. Too bad. We got to where the black SLK exited and low and behold, it's a sweet lookin' little brunette. What a way to start the workday.

| Wish my 38 mile commute had unrestricted speed zone. No such luck, I do however get to see more non drivin idiots per mile than any other place I've driven in the world. Defensive drivin originated here, so did bumper car rides. I wrote a paper years ago discussing the use of truck and idiot routes. No takers and we still have high collision rates on interstate highways caused by idiots driving slow in the left lane. Be careful Kevin, one idiot can ruin your day, they are everywhere. |

| Very true Doug. Thankfully the Europeans have a greater level of respect for road etiquette then the majority of Americans.

| Be careful, though. I was doing 180 when this car changed lanes in front of me - panic breaking ensued and I managed to reduce speed enough not to hit her. It's not all Germans driving on German roads. |

| Wow, a R170 SLK230 can go 140mph? That can't possibly be safe with stock tires/suspension. Very jealous of the unrestricted zone here in the states. Only place we can get that is on a track. I wish we had something like the Nurbergring here too. |

| As safe as can be for any car at those speeds mate its tested to its max if MB felt it real dangerous they would have capped it

| ya theyre are some areas in the states should go to unrestricted. I saw a special on CNN a couple of months ago when some town was trying to get unrestrictd. Anyway, turns out after extensive research, less acidents, and less fatalities on the unrestricted autobahn then U.S highway (average). |

| Yeah the autobahn is much safer than most countries roads are highways or not. But then its not just the being unrestricted the roads are specially built for speed they are smooth as silk all properly cambered to allow rain water to drain off as fast as possible they have some of the best emergency service coverage in the world covering the network great policing and traffic management. When you combine it all together you get the benefits i am all for raising speed limits but not for removing them altogether unless the road is autobahn standard and has all the necessary emergency service coverage and there are not many places in the world with the right conditions for that, and driver training helps a lot German drivers are some of the best about and all get experience on the autobahn's while learning unlike your average Joe.

speaking of racing at 140mph, my bro and I were driving to the "one lap of america" event, and on the left lane was a GTO (holden monaro for the european folks), it took off on us so my brother decided to follow, we quickly went from 80mph to 140mph, the GTO couldn't pull away and had to brake b/c we saw a cop getting on the highway, had to flash the GTO to exit. Anyway it was an interstate highway with no cars at the time.

| You are talking about water spay in German roads...! You should come to Greece and experience the driving conditions in the Highways (lets not even mention the other roads!) when it's raining! Sometimes you get the impression that water is comming out of the asphalt, let alone the aquaplanning! It can be really nasty! |
