Scott,
i've checked this morning how i can reach the filter box.
Gasp !!!
You have spent only 5 minutes to unscrew the 8 screws which secure the cover ?????
Is there any special tip/tool ???
i've received the filters last week and install them. i've understood why i thought it was hard : i've tried to remove the screws without removing the complete assembly from the engine ... ok ...... ok ..... i'm ....
Done with the installation, only took 30 minutes, 15 were to look for the torx screwdriver, I need to be more organized. Probably a 10 minute job, easy enough to clean out every six months if the SLK is your daily driver, I'm going to clean it out once a year. I've attached some pics and a quick installation guide for those who are interested.
1. Pic of the back plastic cover, notice the clips, to remove the plastic cover just pull straight up, can't break anything, remember to unlatch the metal clip near the windshield first, start from one corner and move to the next one. Refer to pic above, there are three hose to remove.
2. Remove 4 torx screws with a torx 20x4 screwdriver to get access to the factory filter. Pic of the factory filter, it's flimsy and made of paper, not good, another reason to swap it with a quality one like the green filter.
3. Pic of the dirty residue that's left over, blow it out and clean it before installing the new filter.
4. Pic of the green installed, drop it in and secure it tightly with the screws. Clip it back to the engine.
Hey Ynot,
Thanks a bunch for the photos - Green Filters arrived yesterday - installed today, took 20-minutes. Woo!!! Hoo!! go for it ladies, not difficult at all............

Yep, simple and easy, everyone should do it, cheap and effective mod.

does any one have pic with the 350 installing instruction?
i couldn't unclipped the hoses and the air box(don't laugh at me)
and I'm too scare that I'll break any clips....
I have a 350, so those pics comes from my 350. you will not break anything, the hoses slide right off, pull straight up, start from one end to the other and the metal clip should just come right off.

Ynot, it seems that the SLK350 also has a 2 piece airbox cover? and that you also lift out the front piece first similar to the SLK55 cover? Your pic in the beginning of this thread only shows the main cover, right? Thanks for any clarifications.

toySLK, If I may answer your question: Yes, in the 350 and also on the 280, it is a two piece air box cover. The front piece is purely decorative.
After removing the front piece and before removing the back piece (that contains the air filters), remove what looks like a vacuum hose at the front of the back piece first, then remove the back part.

Thanks Eddy! So I can just lift the front cover off, right? Yes, I believe there are 3 hoses that need to be pulled off, 2 big ones on both sides and one small one in the middle that you described that is located in front of the back cover. Aren't there clips that connect these hoses? Ynot mentioned that they can be easily slided off. I wonder what keeps them tight enough if they can come off so easily ? Sorry for these simple questions but I haven't try it yet since I plan to change to Green filters after I do the service A in April, but I did order them before the price go up in March in SLK store

No worries.
The 2 large hoses are the air ducts that lead from the front of the engine to the back piece. These can be removed by twisting the back part towards the front of the vehicle with you standing at the front of the vehicle.
Do the left side first (left side as oriented with the driver seated inside the vehicle, driver side in left-hand-drive vehicles). Notice the hoses have corrugations or circular rings or accordion that allow it to be compressed to effect removal. After freeing the back end, the front end can be removed by pushing on the tab at the top and twisting side to side. There is another tab on the lower portion but the air hoses should come off by just releasing the upper tab.
On the right side air hose (350 and 280), I believe there is a clip that holds a small overflow rubber tube leading from the radiator to the cooolant reservoir. BE CAREFUL REMOVING THIS CLIP. They break easily. Here's a link to how I replaced mine (see post #11 and #13ff):http://www.slkworld.com/general-modi...slk-280-a.html
The air hoses are held in place mainly by friction on the rounded end and by tabs on the oval front end.
The front decorative piece just lifts up. Lift from the middle part first with mild to moderate force and it will release the front end of the front piece. Do not lift way up or you'll break some clips. Next gently lift from one side of the front piece (towards the back of the front piece) to release a clip. Then work on the other side. Once the back clips have been released, slide the front piece towards the front of the vehicle and the whole piece should come off. Here's a link on my post about breaking the clips: http://www.slkworld.com/amgs/4227-bo...oke-clips.html

Thanks for the details Eddy! Now I am afraid to break those clips even though the cover can still be stable without them, I would still feel bad (kind of the same feeling I get when I scratched the bottom of my front bumper). So looks like the front cover is similar to the one in the SLK55. May be I should try Bill T's method of removing the 2 covers as one piece.
As a future new owner of the 55, will I get any grief from the MB dealer if I change to the "Green" filter? I wouldn't think so, but are there any warranty issues?

You shouldn't, many people changed their factory air filters to K&N, and most mechanicals leave them alone when they see them, in some cases they take them for their own personal used.
I put the factory filters back in when I take it to service and tell them not to change it b/c my K&N's were taken (long time ago) and replaced with factory ones, I didn't notice until six months later when I took it out to clean. I'd complained but they dealer did nothing. It was my fault too for not noticing until much later, it happened to a couple of my friends as well. I'm not afraid of warranty, I'm afraid they might take it.

Breaking the clips on the front piece (by accident), was a blessing to me. The front piece is now much easier to remove and the whole air box assembly is stable. The 2 clips on the side of the front piece are stuck on quite tightly and require firm and moderate force to unclip.
If you break them, no biggie. Just apply some weather strip foam instead to dampen any vibrations as shown on the aforementioned post about breaking the clips.

Thanks Eddy though I will just try to be extra careful the first time
Ynot, do you have a secret technique of removing the front cover of your 350 ? How come you never mentioned breaking yours. I remember you recommended just pulling up the cover and you said it won't break anything ? or was that just the back cover?

I haven't broke anything yet, no secret, seems pretty straight forward, there are two pieces of plastics covering the engine as seen in my pics, pull the front smaller piece out first then the bigger piece.

Well, I just installed the "Greens" in our SLK 280 in less time than it took to read this thread. And I'm NOT a mechanic -- oh no! I'm the only guy I know who ever fouled up an oil change!
In any event, here's a tip or two. In removing the front plastic cover, unsnap it from the outboard connection points with the rear plastic cover by bending the front cover up gently at the rear outer edges. Then just lift up. The hoses disconnect by just pulling off. No clamps. Then, remove the clip that holds the back of the rear plastic cover on, and just pull the rear cover upward.
After you've removed the rear cover (which has the air boxes underneath) place this cover upside down on a towel or blanket to avoid scratching. After unscrewing the air box screws to get to the filter, spray a bit of WD 40 on the threads. They go back in much easier.
When it's time to snap the rear cover back on, locate those round rubber bits that the clips attach to, and rub a bit of paste wax on them. The back cover will snap back on much easier that way. Just push the hoses back on. Clip the two middle clips of the front cover on, then snap the outboard clips. Then you are done.
My car has less than 2K on the odo, and already the air boxes were dirty. They are going to need cleaning every few months, I fear.
Thanks to all for the advice. Haven't driven enough to get the ECU reset, but I can tell that the engine is quieter.

Ditto here. I received the Green filters I ordered, yesterday. I was concerned with some recent threads where members have broken some of the plastic clips. Wanted to avoid that. I reviewed some of the "how to" threads. Some what awkward procedure until you've completed it once. I completed my SLK and then my wife's. No problems, all clips intact. Hopefully, looking forward to some increase in fuel mileage.
