| One thing I've noticed with the SLK55 is the crazy amount of dust from the pads AMG uses in their brake upgrade - and the multi spoke wheels are a royal bitch to clean. So I tried this stuff... http://www.pylonhq.com/michelin/bdr.htm ...and it has REALLY cut down on the amount of dust that sticks to the wheels. I don't mind washing and cleaning the car, but I HATE doing wheels! ![]() This product does indeed work pretty good.

| Thanks for the tip. I'll try this the next time I wash the car. Is it possible to move this into the "Caring for your SLK" under the general discussion for both the R170 and R171?

| Dont know if any ones used them but EBC perfomance brake pads are quoted as dust free. They come in green or red, the red beeing a very hard compound and designed for racing, I know they do them for the R170 but not sure about the R171. http://www.ebcbrakesdirect.com/car/p...E3+%2897%2D%29 I find the best way of keeping the rims clean is to remove them monthly wash and polish, as the polish stops the dust sticking as much. |

| I had a set of EBC green pads fitted to my last car (a Renault Megane Coupe) and also had EBC turbo grove discs fitted at the same time so I couldn’t tell if the pads alone improved braking but the set up I had fitted was definitely a marked improvement over the originals. They are definitely worth having if you want to keep you wheels cleaner as they didn’t leave any brake dust deposits on my alloys, which suited me as I used to do a lot of miles and only cleaned the car every few months. I had forgotten how good they were until I bought the SLK (R170) and the front wheels where black with dust within a few weeks, so when the current pads need replacing I will be upgrading to the EBC ones again. In the meantime I am going to try and find some of that Michelin Brake Dust Repellent!!! |

| I reckon after all these years, I accept brake dust as a way of life. Regardless of the vehicle, it's a nasty, unsightly problem. I wonder why the car manufacturers don't demand something that doesn't leave such a mess on the wheels? I've tried wheel cleaner to remove the brake dust with unsat results. The best thing I've found is soap, water and a wheel brush. I wash the SLK at least twice a week and that keeps the brake dust in check. All our vehicles have wheels that are easy to clean. I can only imagine the work to keep the sixteen spoke wheels on the SLK 55 clean .

| I've always applied the same Zaino products (including Z5, Z2 Pro, and Z6) on the wheels and it makes cleaning the brake dust easier during car wash. I've tried the Michellin Brake Dust Repellent after reading this post and I couldn't tell the difference or advantage over the Zaino, perhaps it's because Zaino is already on board. I think for those that didn't use Zaino, this would be a cost effective alternative. This is also the reason I prefer a 5-spoke wheel over anything that has more than 7-spokes. (Simply a personal choice for ease of cleaning. This doesn't mean than the other wheels are not awesome). -1-, you just touched on an interesting thing: How often do you wash your car? I'll start a new thread.

| I always have brake dust problem with my BMW 745I & SLK55AMG, they are so many spokes. Ever tried Wax or Repellent, but best is called " Reject", it's kind of glaze coating and easier to clean. |

| Many may not agree with this but I have a large and small "California Car Duster". I use the large to lightly to dust off the wheels and tire sidewalls, then the small to go inbetween the 5 spokes and inside rim as much as I can every day after driving. I have not seen any abrasion or deteriotation of the wheel finish. Done every day my wheels are always clean. The wax on the duster maybe helps. Note: I live in a dry climate.May not work in a damp enviornment. |
