Thumbs up Check Oil Next Fuel Stop

This is interesting just thought I would pass it along
After 8000 miles I got this warning on the screen so I checked the oil and it appeared to be in the safe operating range ---- 2 days later same warning so I took Cruzer into the dealer -- wow right in the write up bay they checked the oil and added one and a half quarts ---- no charge and have a nice day -- never had that happen before --- right on Merc!!!

I got the add 1qt at next fueling yesterday and today on the way to work. Did the check level menu thing on the cluster as per the manual and it said the oil level was ok. Must be on the verge of being a qt low or something. Looks like unlike the 350 the 55 doesn't have a dipstick as I believe the red one is for the trans.

they ripped you off

a problem-less engine should not consume that much oil in between each oil change.... if so, then it is obviously an engine defect. Defect = their responsibility.

The sensor is real temperamental so this warning can be taken with a pinch of salt normally if you check the level afterward using the cluster it will say level OK.

The chances of the engine using the amount of oil required to trip the warning are slim to none but as i say it does appear for no reason most of the time.

The dipstick tube for the 55 is under the red cap but need an extra long MB one to fit down into the sump, the tranny does not have one.

Thanks. It did it again on the way to work today. Guess it is borderlined or something. Think I should put a 1/2qt in or something?

Cluster to show Odometer.

Key to 0 then to 1, R Button X3 (Do this fast), Key to 2 and press the up arrow.

Do this with a warm engine check the level that shows on the display to the maximum the engine can hold, dont max it out and remember oil expands when hot and you will be putting it in cold.

Mine showed 7.2qt just now with the motor warm. The manual says 8.5qt with filter change so I guess I will add about 3/4 of a qt.

Now I have to go to the store to get some 0w-40 supersyn instead of this 5w-40 stuff the dealer sold me at $8.50 USD.

If you haven't opened the one bought from MB, you should be able to return it. I recommend adding 1/2 quart first and see what the MFD display says afterwards or recheck after a day. It's safer/better to add small aliquots and recheck the reading.

Ditto.

So long as its not opened then they should accept it back.

VitaminT, When your buying the oil remember the approved one is Mobil 1

Yeah I will only use Mobil 1. I used it in my 240sx with the turbo motor and it worked great. I think I can get the 0w-40 Mobil1 supersyn euro formula at autozone, but since I haven't opened the other from the MB dealer I will probably just swap it with them.

Thanks for all the help, I will keep you updated. Sorry for the major hijack, I seem to be doing that a lot lately.

I've also seen them at Walmart, but then there may be regional differences on how the stores are stocked. IIRC, about US $6.50 per quart.

No MFD display of oil level on the 350. One has to get under the hood. Am I right?

It should be there, the computer knows the oil level even if to check it normally you have to dip it.

Am I aiming for a total of 8.0 or 8.5 quarts when hot? I am going to get some of the correct stuff and add about a half of quart after work today and recheck it tomorrow after I drive the car some.

Go for 8 its never wise to max out the system because you never know what conditions could cause the level to rise again.

If you fill it 1/2 a quart then drive the car for about an 45mins/hour so it heats up as high as its gonna get under normal driving then let it sit for about 30 mins and check the level again, repeat the process until you have the level where you want it.

The MFD should display the changes instantly but you cant guarantee that its accurate until the oil has been heated and all had a chance to return to the sump.
