Default Now smart enough to ask questions

Hi Dan, . . . Ok, . . .I've now had my SLK350 for a month & have become educated enough to (maybe) ask intelligent questions!

#1. The car is an early 05, and thus far doesn't exibit any signs of excess
oil usage however, do you know what VIN's or engine series numbers
were affected with this problem?

#2 It has a 7 speed, . . .are there any known problems with this
transmission? How often would you think the transmission fluid
should be changed? Is there an internal (or external) transmission
filter? What brand & type of fluid should be used?

#3 What is the procedure to flush/change the break fluid?

#4 Is there a service/repair manual on CD available?

I'm a DIY type & have been doing all of my own work since I was a teenager. Even rebuilt/restored a couple of aircraft to flying condition including complete engine overhauls.

I bought the car from the original owner. It would appear he maintained it properly. It was garaged and not driven in bad (winter) weather. It now has just over 15,000 miles on it.

Thanks, Bob E.

If I may answer one of your questions (to the best of my knowledge and I'm not Dan ):

#1 Look at the engine no.(not VIN). This is engraved near the junction between the engine and transmission, near where the oil dipstick is located. Oil consumption was up to engine no. 272 9xx 30 05875

Ya, . . .I don't expect to "go after" anything much that would require diagnostics however, . . .I wouldn't think change/flush brake fluid or changing the transmission fluid would be too much of a challange.
But then I could be wrong! (everyone is entitled to one mistake per day, . . .so far I'm only 49,997 ahead)

OK mate here goes,

2) Early 7G's had valve body issues that caused really rough shifts but thats the only real known problem, the fluid is changed when the ASSYST says i want my transmission fluid replaced since its all based on the flexible system and the gearbox uses a magnetic filter system internal to the box.

To get access to the gearbox you need MB tool's, the fluid used should always be MB's own brand.

3) Fairly standard procedure mate similar to most other's cars so long as its done with the power off to prevent damage to the electrical side of the system, i can get you the full procedure if you want it.

4) Yeah WIS disk's come up on eBay all the time but they are mostly copied from the dealer disks and don't have any key's so they wont run, MB won't publish a service manual until way after the car stop's production I'm afraid.

Dan, . . .thanks for the info!
The 7 speed in my SLK seems to be operating correctly.

Yes, I would like the procedure for brake system flush/fluid change. if you could write it up, that would be great. At least I won't need to visit the dealer for that.

Thanks, Bob E.
