Default Quick question, oil gauge shows 9.0L after oil change

Hey Dan,

Quick question, oil gauge shows 9.0L after oil change, but i measured out exactly 8.0L when i poured...but just in case i emptied out about 1L just in case the engine wasn't completely emptied the first time....gauge still shows 9.0L. Have yet to start the car...did i mess up somehow?

Thanks!

If you removed both drains all that might be left is a little bit knocking around the filter but not a significant amount, so if you have removed 1L it obviously should have reacted to that.

Is this the display in the service menu?

A simple test would be to drain off another liter and see if it changes if it does not put it back in again and take it as a dodgy sensor, is the car totally level?

Hey Dan, i only removed one drain, but I also replaced the oil filter. Typically, i drain everything out from the bottom drain, remove the filter and oil cap, let drip, close up the drain, use 1L of oil to flush, drain that out, then change the filter and fill with oil, reset service indicator.

car is on level ground (maybe 1% grade). i am looking in the service menu. Last time i did the same procedure it worked fine...is it ok to turn the engine over? How difficult is the oil sensor change? Or leave to the dealership?

If your happy the oil level is within specs then i see no problem in starting her up.

Keep an eye on the level display in the service menu after you start the car and watch what happens, typically it will fluctuate a little as the oil starts moving and you should be able to get the same effect by driving up/down inclines.

If it stays totally dead the sensor replacement is cake the only thing is you have to drain the oil again and thats a little bit of a PITA, if your car has warranty then it might be just as simple to get the dealer to pop it on the DAS before you replace anything.

The sensor also produces the oil temp and quality info so if it does get put on a DAS normally the oil temps will also look odd, thats a good confirmation the sensor is at fault.

Hopefully its just a temporary glitch that will clear itself, if the sensor does fluctuate when you start her but still stays way high just keep an eye out in case you have some stuck oil somewhere but i can't see how that would have happened.

Hey Dan!!

THanks a lot!

I drove the car around the block, it fluctuated down a little bit, and suddenly dropped down to 8.2. Thanks! i guess when i did the flush thing the fluid got backed up?

Anyway, everythings ok now!

Thanks again!

Hey mate,

No worries, glad to help.

Its a capacitance sensor so it's easy confused, could just be that now its properly distributed around the engine its happy again.

Best thing i can suggest is to get the dipstick from MB, thats what we use because it gets around any possible fault in the car.

Dan, do you have a part number on the correct dip stick for the SLK55? I asked my dealer and they were clueless...

In Don's (-1-) thread about the oil being overfilled in the Ask Dan Premium bit i posted it up then, if they don't give you the chart to go along with the dipstick give me a shout.
