| Since I started posting here a few days ago, I have seen references to "Green Air Filter Elements" and some good things said about them. All I know about non-OEM filter elements is K&N -- which I had on my Honda S 2000 until a mechanic told me that I was getting too much dirt in my intake! K&N gives a bit of a performance boost (very small) but not worth dirt in the intake. Do Green Filters cause this problem? And do they help performance/fuel efficiency? Thanks, Richard |

| Couple pics for comparison. I gained 9hp in back to back runs on the dyno compared to the stock filters - not bad for what you pay. ![]() ![]() Gratuitous dyno shot ![]()

| And the green filters actually trap more dirt and other stuff that is sucked up by the air intakes. It is amazing how much dirt is trapped by the green filters. |

| Bill: I tried to take advantage of your offer and get the Green Filters. But the store site made me log in again, and rejected my user name and/or password! So I tried to recover this information via store site instrictions, and was told my email address was invalid! I know it is not, as I have been receiving info from this board on replies to my posts and subscribed threads. Bill, please email me at richhruth@aol.com and give me a way to log on the store site. |

| Bill: Thanks, I ordered two Green filters. Now, some questions. Do I need a "cleaning kit" with them, or will the one I have for my K&N do the trick? Also, where can I get a Green Filter for an '01 Honda S 2000 (another one of my red roadsters.) I had been running a K&N in it (with some other intake mods that the S 2000 needs but the SLK does not), and my tech said to put the stock element back on as I was getting too much dirt in the intake. As you may know, K&Ns don't filter as well as most stock elements, but as the Green Filters do better, they might help the S 2000 as well. |

| A word of caution !!! I just removed these filters from my SLK320 after I found them with the outer rubber ring melted. The element got separated off the outer rubber ring leaving the engine with no filter protection. I will never buy these filters again. I am switching to K&N which I have used on my other cars with no problem. |

| Uh there was a warning about this, it was a bad batch or something like that during a production switch. Obviously your car your call but i think your MAF will suffer with a K&N Edit - Eddy beat me to it, i must be getting slow in my old age.

| Perhaps Bill T remembers. I recall the older style was thicker/deeper when viewed from the side. The new batch is thinner.

| For what it may be worth, I had a K&N "cone" shaped filter on my '01 S 2000 for about 20,000 miles. At my 30, 000 miles service, my tech showed me how much dirt it had let into my intake, and the work it took for him to clean it out. Naturally, I put the stock cone filter back on, and would like to get a green filter for this car as well. Before that, I had been a "fan of K&N, but no more. I recently installed "greens" on our SLK 280, and saw nothing about them that would worry me about gasket failure. Now the SLK has a much better designed air intake system than the stock S 2000 does. Indeed, I would cite the stock S 2000 air intake as a prime example of how NOT TO design an air intake. In contrase, the SLK has a very well designed air intake system, and the main advantage you will see from installing "greens" is fuel efficiency. |

| Hmm kind of making me think twice about getting an aftermarket air filter. There seems to be three chief complaints about them: 1. Making sure they are dry after oiling/cleaning them. 2. "Melting" parts 3. Improper fit allowing debris and dirt to get sucked into the engine. Although fuel efficiency is a big draw, is there any other reason to get these? 9 hp is too negligible a power difference and I really don't see how much fuel savings can be gained through this. It doesnt seem like the OEM filter has any of these drawbacks aside from the fact that they dont allow your engine to breathe as deeply. The gains people are feeling might all be psychological............ My 2 cents......thanks. |

| Well, for what it is worth, my problem with the K&N had nothing to do with an oiling, improper fit, or melting problem. It was merely that the filter didn't provide, well, enough filtration for operation in my very dusty state of Oklahoma. I have been assured that the "greens" filter much better. But you are correct, in that if a slight increase in power and a slight increase in fuel efficiency aren't that important, then there is little reason to upgrade the filter elements. I do have "greens" on our SLK 280, and have experienced a little bit better fuel efficiency, plus what seems to be a bit better acceleration (though I have not timed it). I installed them myself, and the fitment was such that I don't see how the elements could let any dirty air bypass them. I do appreciate the increased fuel efficiency, with the required 91 octane selling for close to $3.60 per gallon in my area. Whereas I said in my last post that the S 2000 air intake system was a good example of how NOT TO design such a system, the air intake system on both my SLK and C 320 are just as I would have designed them. Therefore, we are not going to improve performance or fuel efficiency to a dramatic degree by any changes to the the air intake systems -- including installation of green filters. The improvement in these areas is for those who appreciate small gains at a small price. |

| After a couple of days driving after installing the Green filters, I actually felt less tight on acceleration, and felt it's more loose and less power. I am not sure if it's psychological though. I am planning to put back the oem filters and see if there is any difference. |
