Default wheel scraping on full lock

I think my right front tyre [stock 17"] is scraping on full lock to the left. Havent yet checked the full lock turn to the right.

Is that usual?

No, not with factory wheels and standard suspension. Check stationary with full lock left and right. Determine what's touching.

No that is not supposed to happen, I would take it to the dealership because you might have a problem. From on top of my head I can only think of one thing which might have to do with this and this could be the suspension system such as the springs or a busted shock probably ?

If its tire contact then it will be hitting the liner, its probably just alignment.

If you had gotten a failure you would know about it, i take it she drives fine?

Get it checked because your not doing your tire any favours.

Well , the plot thickens.

On stanstill with engine running and front cover open, i can hear a scratchy whirring each time i turn the wheel. This is faint and can only be heard standing outside and turning the wheel with front open. On full lock- either directions there is a distinct scraping noise and the rpm slightly dips. On releasing the turn on the wheel the scraping disappears. There is some movement of one of the cables on the right of the engine on full lock.

I think this has to do with power steering mechanism. The cable is insulated and arises from the left of the engine block [when seen from the front] goes anteriorly and then dips down towards the right front end. It also seems to have some voltage markings on it. Sadly my digital camera is not to be seen or i would have taken a piccy.

I suppose i have to take her in.

Any ideas?

Good thing i have a Honda Accord to fall back on!

Do you have speed sensitive steering?

Possibly the rack has been damaged if your hearing it scratch all the time and the drop in RPM's could be caused by increased resistance on the pump.

You don't bump the car up high kerbs do you?

I dont think i have speed sensitive steering and i dont usually climb kerbs. Had to do it once though as there was no way though and did it very slowly and carefully.

Got it checked today. Apparently the sound on turning the wheel is of the steering pump. The oil level was lower than it should be and has been topped up. The rough sound on full lock is still there but is mildly better. Apparently that is normal on full lock.

What do you think Dan?

Its really hard to tell without seeing it in person, when you hit the limit you do get what feels like a small tap and perhaps a thud but both are very quiet and should not be transmitted back up to the steering wheel.

Anything you can feel in the wheel is not 'normal', the PS pump can whine we have had threads on it before but its normally a constant whine and I've never seen it get so low as to drop the RPM's.

Keep an eye on it, listen out for any weird noises or patches of fluid because i still think your steering rack may be iffy.

Thats not to say its dangerous because it has many parts that are only used for assist so don't worry about it but just keep your ears switched on.

Thanks Dan,

There is no abnormal feedback to the wheel and the rpm drop is obvious only on idling . I will keep an eye out and plan to extend the warranty for another year.
