Default Is a cap missing from this tube?

When I had my service A done on my 2006 SLK 55, the dealer siphoned the oil out of the sump. I drove the car home and checked the oil level the next morning. Sure enough they overfilled it. I siphoned almost three quarts of extra oil out of the sump. I will never return to Napleton's Autowerks in Loves Park, IL after that.I don't think any damage was done. I've driven the car for another 3000 miles since then w/o problems. Once in a while I do notice a smell like burning oil when I park it in my garage but I haven't detected any drips, change in gas mileage, transmission issues or any thing else.

After reading a thread about a similar issue, I decided to change my oil and filter myself this morning. I also cleaned my Green Filters. When reinstalling my air box I noticed a tube the extends behind the left rean of the air box, down along the firewall into the depths where I can't tell where it originates. I've attached a couple of photos. Dan, what is this tube? What does it do? Is there supposed to be a cap on it? It is open to the air. I don't remember ever noticing it before. Is it possible that the dealer service man left a cap off?

Thanks!!

That will most likely be the source of the oil smell.

It goes down to the sump and its for manually checking the oil levels, it should have a red sealing cap.

This is where a dipstick should be in non-AMG models, for the 55 AMG there is a red cap on it. I can post photo later tonight if desired.

Would a dipstick for the 350 be okay to substitute instead of the red cap?

Yeah probably mate but it would not read accurate so it couldn't be used and i expect the cap would be cheaper or in this case FOC since the dealer messed up and lost the original.

I can check mate but its probably going to be a few days since I'm swamped right now.

It wont do any harm being left like that until you sort it but if you do want to cover it to protect it from FOD or whatever then just get some strong tape and use that to seal the opening until you get the red cap.

No excuse for such sloppy work. After my recent similar incident, I received an email style customer survey. I gladly completed, stating the facts (changed the engine air filter instead of the Service E cabin air filter, and engine oil level over filled). I was surprised that I received a call from the dealer General Manager and later a call from the Service Manger. I expressed my concern for competent factory service and the high cost. To maintain my warranty, I must return to one of two local MB dealers owned by the same person. I shouldn't have to take a vow to never return to the local dealers and drive one and a half hours west to the next dealer. No guarantee they would provide better service. What's a car owner to do? For me, I'll inform the dealer I EXPECT competent, professional service I pay top dollar for and they state they provide. In the interim, I'll followup on their work to the best of my ability. Simple followup everyone can do, VERIFY THE ENGINE OIL LEVEL AFTER OIL CHANGE, before leaving the dealer.
