| I was out for a drive and notice my display screen was getting a little dirty. When I got back to the garage, I took some Windex to it. I started to notice an area in the center of the display looked different when it dried. I then realized that there is some kind of coating on the display screen. Since I had removed some of it, I went ahead and removed the rest so it would be even. This took some work and time. I am wondering what the coating was, did I do any damage and can it be re-coated if necessary. My guess is that it would have come off eventually after several cleanings. I suppose it was either a protectant or an anti-glare coating. Has anyone else seen this? I have not had the car back out in the sun yet to see if there is a difference in visibility on the display. Interestingly, the display is hard to read when I wear my polarized shades. I have to move my head a little to the left or right to see it. I'll have to note if this is still the case with the coating removed. Lastly, the coating is darker than the display surface itself. That's how I was easily able to tell I had started to remove it.

| There is an anti-glare coating on the COMAND display. Someone did the same thing, it was remedied by applying a protective sheet (like those used on PDA's) on the screen (IIRC, it was available at e-bay). The sheet made the screen look better by not having the uneven color. (It may have been -1- that answered to the same, I'm not sure).

| Eddy's right mate its the anti-glare coating that you removed. To be honest Merc say not to remove it from the screen but i doubt it would cause any harm to the unit in doing so, you might just want to get one of the coatings Eddy talked about to provide a little protection. I bet the LCD itself is fine.

| As a corollary, I only use microfiber cloth designed for eyeglasses to clean the COMAND display screen. Perhaps a drop of clean water on the cloth if needed, no solvents or alcohol of any sort. Example: cloth supplied/used by Oakley sunglasses.

| Another related link: http://www.slkworld.com/general-disc...ct-comand.html I now use a slightly thicker non-glare plastic (found attached to the covers of 3-ring binders, so one can insert a cover illustration, etc on the binder) and it doesn't fly off when driving at speed with the roof retracted. It also keeps dust away from the COMAND screen, ergo less need to clean and the display can be seen well during the day and is not even noticeable at all at night.
