Unhappy Electric glitch?

Now the roof has refused to come down a couple of times. But always worked after overnight engine shut down. When troublesome , on activating the roof down switch, the passenger side window will roll down half way and stop and the boot lid will open but the roof wont move. I found that if i opened and shut the passenger door, things would be fine.

Today, on cold start , warning symbol on the display indicating one or more of the dislay measurements wont be working. After a long drive switch off and on, the warning light has gone off.

On coming back to the car, the automatic partial roll down on opening of the driver side door is not happening. The roof is not working - as above and the driver side window is not rolling down on activating the switch.

So my beloved SLK is going to the dealer on tuesday for its first [hopefully last] fault.

What could it be? I am very much upset. In the last 4 months , i have formed such an attachment to the car that i almost feel like a member of my family or a pet is being taken to hospital.

Do you have a vario roof module installed?

The roof fault sounds like a roof position microswitch but it can't really be that because only one window rolls down and opening and closing the pass door fixes the fault, so i will go with a problem in a control module or the CANBUS.

Probably the same thing with the combi giving you errors and with the drivers door but the drivers door fault could also be the door control module if the switch in the door card does not respond.

This is one of the faults that can go two ways either meaningful codes are present and the dealer will be able to trace the cause or the car will have not stored any codes / loads of codes that make no sense and the dealer will have to shotgun the culprits one by one.

If its the second of the two i can guarantee this wont be your last trip to the dealer so i really hope its the first option, overall it sounds like a network issue possibly one failed control module aggravating the situation.

Where are you based mate?

No not really, you don't have any problems starting the car do you?

Unfortunately Mercedes electronics are not the best quality wise and the networked design of modern cars means a simple failure can cause a lot of problems.

Don't worry about a thing chances are the dealer will put it on the SDS and it will find the fault right away.

You have never jump started the car, used a fast battery charger or used your car as the donor to jump another have you?

There is no trouble getting it started and i have never needed to jump start it or used it as a donor. The car is under warranty which is a relief.

Well so long as you have never done any of the things i mentioned i doubt you have any serious damage and like i said its probably just one unit.

Nothing to worry about

Cool, thought it proably would be they are prone to failure especially in the colder weather we are having now because they are mounted to the doors outer skin and experience large temperature swings.

They fall apart from the inside out.

All sorted by the nice chaps at the merc dealership in Leeds. I was pleasantly surprised by their rather overall behaviour and my car was given back on both occassions nicely valeted. We need a thread about Mercedes dealers in UK and our personal experiences with them.

After the repair, i find that the roof is closing a bit harder and makes a louder noise. Is that something to worry about?
