Default NAV Upgrade....

I got the disk from Bill, but wanted to know if I can check my current system to see the version number to know if I should do the upgrade or not. How do I check it?

Racer, IIRC, if you follow the method to go into menu that leads to dyno, voltmeter, etc. (link: http://www.slkworld.com/slk-r171-gen...dyno-mode.html), you can scroll (using the up and down arrows) within this menu and one of them is the SW version. The SW version is for the head unit, IIRC.

Does your car show ETA on the lower section of the display or do you have to go into the info menu to view it?

If you have to do the latter update the thing.

I did the upgrade, then all hell broke loose. Well, at least my NAV no longer functioned.

I called Bill up, as I thought the problem lied in the fact that I pulled two of the three listed fuses out, but not the third. The NAV fuse in the passenger compartment and engine compartment don't really do anything. I could not find the listed one on the "left side of the trunk."

What I thought was the fuse box back there turned out to be my Sirius radio. Bill asked me about removing the pins, and then we figured out I did not know about the missing step: Removing the carpeting around the DVD player. Then I found the back fuse box, pulled the fuse, and everything was golden.

That back fuse box, BTW, is the only one Mercedes does not have how to get to in the manual. Thankfully Bill remembered getting to it on his car.

Thing is, there are new options, but as far as the estimated time of arrival, it's still in the INFO selection. I do not see it "at the bottom" as you say, even if I turn the GPS info display off. WHere is it suppsed to be at?

3 fuses?

Do you just have the disk?

Your very lucky you did not permanently damage the navigation processor its fuse is installed in the rear SAM and after the upgrade the processor wont leave service mode until the fuse is pulled or the unit is disconnected.

Here's what i would do now -

Do the update again and follow the instructions to the letter now you know where the fuse is make sure you pull it when asked, once the update has been done the processor will accept new software, i did not send the headunit disk to the US because i need to source the US version so when your next at the dealer ask them to update the COMAND headunit using the service disk (they should have a copy) that will enable the ETA.

Whats happening at the moment is the processor is sending the info but the headunit cant understand it.

You missed the part where I said I found the back fuse and pulled it, now the system works. The NAV all works again, and I do see some new features, like the ability to bring up the info about close gas station symbols, etc. Just not the ETA at the bottom.

I noticed it mate, my point was your not meant to do anything other than follow the instructions if the COMAND complained about nav not being available then you must have deviated somewhere along the line.

I guess you followed the instructions bar the part about the fuse, normally the processor will just lock up and thats that it happens quite often when people do daft things like put movie DVD's into the drive.

#1. The instructions said to pull the NAV fuse, to which, according to the fuse manual, there are THREE. It did not indicate which one.

#2. The instructions did NOT say to remove carpeting.

So I did my best. However, I figured it out and got it working.

BUT! You did not answer my question about where am I supposed to see the ETA at as you said "on the bottom"?

There was another leaflet with the disk that had better instructions i believe it said either remove the navigation fuse at slot X on the rear SAM or remove the panel around the navi and disconnect it for a minute.

I guess it must have got lost along the way or something but it did have more detailed info when it was sent out because the disk instructions are kinda vague i agree.

I don't think you totally understand what you have upgraded the disk is for the navigation processor not the headunit i need to send that over still.

Basically you first upgrade the processor and then the headunit afterward when both updates have been applied you will get the ETA on the lower part of the screen where you have the GPS info ONLY when the navi is in guidance mode not when its just tracking you with the map.

Your dealer will have the headunit if you want ETA asap.

The dealer said "There are NO updates for your NAV system at all."

But yet, this did give me more options, such as jumping from gas station icon to show what it is (name and address).

RacerCub68, not on the NAV itself but update on the COMAND head unit. Perhaps you can coax them to check and upgrade by saying the Comand head unit "freezes" and you have to turn off and turn on for it to work.

How do you "jump" to the gas station icon to get info? Use one of the soft keys? Is it on route/destination navigation mode or just plain map mode?

In any mode Eddy you can select the symbols shown on the current map display and display extra information about them.

You can also manually scroll with the direction arrows to another location with the map display.
