Command Shut Down

I just completed a road trip to Vancouver over the last few days, and on the way home my Command winked out twice! Each time I was listening to my Ipod and the song title remained on screen on the main instrument pod but the music stopped and the Command screen was off. I pushed the on button for the Command screen once and the MB logo appeared then disappeared. I did this a second time and then everything was fine.

Any thoughts?

Oh yeah this happens,

Two problems that can cause this mate,

The audio gateway overheats and stops functioning locking up the MOST until the hardware watchdog forces a reload, this can be accompanied by cluster errors but not always.

Some dodgy software on the headunit causes it to fail in certain situations it will release itself when the audio gateway reloads it.

If its your audio gateway overheating then a TSB is about that tells the dealer to replace it with one that has a fan but that does not really fix the problem just makes it less frequent, if its the headunit then not much can be done sorry mate.

If you pop it into your dealer it might have left an overheat fault code behind.

If it's the HU, from your experience, would it be replaced under warranty or just the fan fix?

If its the HU then its software and does not log any faults it wont be replaced.

If the AGW has logged a fault it will be replaced with a unit containing a fan unless that unit is already fitted then they will just reset the code and return the car.

I have the same MY as OP.

My COMAND rarely, but a couple of times over the first 18 months did exactly the same, plus some other strange behavior.

Mentioned it to SA at sked maint, and they checked and updated the s/w (in either the COMAND or HU or something).

Hadn't had a problem since and picked up some new functions for Audio (i.e. Mute also pauses CD/MP3 now, and more options on Random/Shuffle play).

Just received the NAV Update Rel 1.91 and will be installing it shortly. Problem hasn't happenned since. A HU upgrade is to follow. Hopefully that nails it.
