Default door pins

i feel silly asking this but i tried getting the door pins off so i could replace them with aluminum ones. i assumed that they just screw on and off. i tried with my fingers to unscrew them but they wouldn't budge. i wanted to make sure before i took some pliers to them. is there any other way to get them off.

It's hard to twist by hand, wrap it with a towel and use pliers to twist it off, it comes off easily that way.
