Default Designo Steering Wheel

Hi Dan,

I've just recently put down the deposit on a new SLK55 and ordered it with the Designo leather interior (Classic Red/Black). I have also ordered the 2 tone steering wheel as per the UK brochure but have my doubts as to whether this is possible. The reason I say this is because it isn't listed in the SLK55 extra options (all other Designo items are). I was told by one retailer that it wasn't possible but I got the impression he couldn't be bothered to find out. I'm waiting for the guy who I placed the order with to get back to me with confirmation but he's taking forever. Just wondering if you might know, surely if you can put leather inserts on the standard SLK steering wheel you can do the same with the AMG one?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys for the quick response!
I am aware that AMG do offer 2 types of 2 tone leather steering wheel (ergonomic and EVO as per the AMG options list). I have been told that the car would be built by mercedes and would then have the Designo leather installed and from there it would go to AMG for them to work their magic (don't take this as gospel as it was the Mercedes salesman who told me this). My concern was that because the steering wheel is an AMG sports one, which I would assume has to be fitted by AMG, there may be a problem putting Designo leather on it?

Seeing as the MB retailer has already taken my deposit, add to that the fact that none of the UK advertising literature says you can't, I will be sure to kick up a real fuss and insist he gets it sorted!!

I know it may seem a little petty but that was the item I particularly liked about the Designo options.

Just out of curiousity Dan (this probably sounds thick!) but what is EPC?

Thanks again.

The car will be built in Bremen from start to finish, all the parts are located there including all standard designo options (custom colors are produced at AMG and the car will be sent to them without an interior if thats the case) the options you picked are standard and will be fitted at build.

Nothing is done at AMG on 99% of the cars made they ship out engines to the factories who do all assembly, at the start of AMG it was all done in house but thats cost-inefficient and quickly went outta the window when DC took over.

Can i just check have you ordered the AMG performance pack option i will need to know so i can get the right page up on the machine, EPC is the Electronic Parts Catalog mate we use it for everything involving parts and it keeps and up-to date listing of all current options and part numbers.

Nope I've not ordered the performance pack, it's just the standard SLK55. I did look at it and it just seemed like a lot of money for what you get, would I be right in assuming this?

It´s too less for your money. A little CF, heavy rims, different breaks, the performance steering wheel (which is really nice!) and coilovers - that´s all for nearly 6.000,00 Euro. Leave that money at Bilstein an other tuners and you get a lot more. In former times the Vmax (280km/h) was included. Today they charge extra 2.800,00 Euro for it

I agree with you and Gero its too much money for no gain at all in fact you could call it a loss with the heavier wheels.

I have checked EPC and the Designo two-color is available confirming what we all thought before.

Thanks, just to let you know Gero the performance pack in the UK is currently £3600 which equates to about 5300 euros. Which kind of surprises me that it works out cheaper over here, usually in the UK we pay premium for anything vehicle related. I suppose it could just be down to fluctuations in currency?

Good news about the steering wheel it should finish off the interior just nicely. If I don't get a positive response from the dealer I'll ask him to check with the EPC.

Did you leave the aluminium std trim or go for classic red leather in nappa to replace the silver trim in the dashboard ?

Classic red roll over bars ?

Congradulations in advance sounds nicely spec'd

I went for the classic red on the:

Seats
Roll over bars
Gearshift
Steering wheel (as you know!)
Door pull handles
Handbrake lever
and the strip on the dash.

I did kind of like the aluminium strip in the dash but you have to take that with the handbrake lever and door pull handles.

Hopefully it will look like this:

Maybe just a little too much red accent, but overall it looks good.

I see where you're coming from but I've seen an SLK with just the seats and roll over bars in classic red and it didn't seem very well balanced. I'm not sure if you've seen the classic red leather but it's not quite as bright and in your face as what it is in the brochure.

I'd definitely recommend to anyone who is looking to order a vehicle to go have a look at the leather and paint in the flesh. I know they try to do their best when they produce the brochures but I don't think the colours are a fair representation. For instance I was in two minds as to whether or not to order Platinum Black paint. It looked like a darker shinier black in the Designo brochure compared to the Obsidian. and although it is a great colour it just wouldn't have gone with the interior.

Paul, I've seen that interior in person and its a highlight to many SLK's very distinctive.

If you want there are red seatbelts available from the sports package.

Really? I may have to consider that, mind you I'm not sure if I'll end up getting them grimy. I really do like the AMG alpaca grey but for the same reason I didn't bother.

Would anyone happen to know what type of gearshift badge I would get, would it be the Designo one or is there an AMG one?

Also although the multipiece rims with the performance pack are heavier, as mentioned above, I do really like the look of them and was wondering if they are an option separately and if so any idea what the UK price would be?

Thanks guys!

You can buy them separate if you want mate but i really would not recommend it.

About your shifter it will probably be Designo, AMG just use a blank plate.

Not actually sure about the price of the wheels i have never checked, i would look now but i'm at home sorry mate.

The Gearshift logo will be in Designo lettering but in italics, very nice.

Dan, Gero, & Alroumi,

Thanks!

Dan, don't worry about the price I'll get the salesman to look into it (that's what his commission is for!). I'm just wanting a set of wheels that aren't going to be a pain in the arse to clean! I thought seeing as I'm getting the car from new I'd be able to weigh the standard ones in against an upgraded set of AMG's and not pay full list price.

Gero, I really like the car and the registration plate MIG453 is quite fitting, no not because I think it looks like a welding machine, I mean it bears striking resemblance to a jet fighter! The wheels are great but I think I'd have a preference to put on AMG ones, despite knowing that I'm going to pay through the nose for them (so to speak!!)

Alroumi, I do like the Designo gearshift badge but again I think I'd like an AMG one (why? I don't know?? Maybe it's because I want to see what car I'm driving when I hold the palm of my hand up to the rear view mirror? dyageddit?)
