| Dan, ('05 SLK350 (R171) USA S#WDBWK56F85F043453 I would like to move the 6 Disc Changer out of the front glove box and relocate it in the trunk next to the NAV cd unit. Is there a cable extention I can purchase to do the job? Or do I need to build one myself. Would there be any problem with current levels or flow in the system to move the changer? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Pawnman5 ![]() ![]() |

| It could be done mate yeah thats not a problem. You would need to build a bracket for it yourself and maybe use some good adhesive to bond it to the tank carrier because all the brackets behind there are full up and its all magnesium so i would not recommend drilling more holes. The changer has to be in the correct orientation so would need to install it next to the nav processor or somewhere it can sit on its belly like it is now. You could then close the MOST loop in the glovebox and create an opening after the navi and insert the changer into the loop there, the +12 GND and Wake lines need to be extended into the trunk from the glovebox if you can use a soldering iron then the easiest thing to do would be cut the 3 wires solder on new cable lengths and then solder the connector back on the end of the new wire because i am unaware of any extension adapter for the harness to simply plug in. It can be done if your handy with tools and it would need the SDS to recode the MOST to the new loop config but thats a 5 minute job at most.

| Could I just extend all the wires that are hooked to the unit and then plug it back in without having to recode the loop? Thanks Pawnman5 |

| No MOST is optical fiber to extend it would create a loop bigger than the system can handle. You would need to close the loop in the glovebox and open it in the trunk

| Mainly, because I only use the changer if I'm traveling and I could load 6 disc in it in the trunk with no problem. It would be nice to have the glove box for my wife to put items in (It's a wife thing...) and after 31 yrs. with the same beautiful woman, I try to keep her happy. (She is the one that talked me into buying the SLK) She calls it my Mid-Life crisis car. I also didn't know it was optical fiber, I thought I could just solder in wire extentions and re-plug it in. Now I'll have to give it a long hard look. Thanks, Dan & -1- Pawnman5 |

| Dan, Is the optical cabling different b/w the 171 and 170? Because, as you know, the changer on the 170 is in the trunk. Would it not be possible to use a 170 cable to relocate the changer in the 171? Just thinking out loud...sort of.

| I believe the optical fiber itself is the same and just the data standard it runs is different but its not so much the fiber itself thats the problem because of the SLK's Phone and Navi systems being in the trunk the necessary fiber is already there and you can buy small extensions from MB to hook up devices. The problem is you would not be able to have a strand that long without repeaters because the fiber runs around the car in a loop you would be going from the front to the back and then to the front again and you would start getting signal degradation so you would buy a small adapter from MB to join the loop where you removed the changer and as i mentioned above open the loop and insert MB's extension in the trunk.

| I spoke to the car stereo shop owner here about such a move and working with MB system. He advises it is simple if you are familiar with the way it works, further said most good shops can do in an hour or so about $50-$75.00/ For me that would be cheap insurance if I found a shop I trusted. Just a thought...... ![]() ![]() |

| Just a quick question about the 6 disc autochanger, is it a difficult job to install one into a car without one (Audio20)? Thanks |

| Changer is £400 then the brackets at MB's prices say £50ish. Then the wiring, fiber and connectors prob looking at £550/600 for the whole thing mate with install. If you installed yourself obviously less but depends on how confident you are.

Dan, the dealership is quoting me 2.5 to 3 hours labour at approx £128 per hour to fit this Any recommendations on where I might be able to get it done for £500 - £600 all in, rather then £900ish! Thanks

For some reason though I don't feel at all confident these days! However I don't mind travelling if it's going to save me a packet. Dan do you think I'm better of saving my cash and maybe having a Command system retro fitted? This is possible, isn't it?

| Retro-fitting a COMAND is a very expensive venture mate. Might be worth giving some dealers outside the London area a call and asking for quotes

| No mate probably more like 3k in parts. Labour is the killer, needs a new wiring harness and the AGW fitting along with the Nav module it all add's up. It used to be a simple swap and still is on some of the cars but the smaller models have the parts spread out over the car and that makes it really hard to work on.
