Default R170 Only second gear was working????

Hi guys,

today it was a beautiful day here in holland and I was just cruising with the top down everything was ok until...

I drove in second gear until 5000rpm and wanted to shift to third gear but it blocked somehow and it keeps blocking, didn't shift to any gear anymore and I had no more neutral except with the clutch pushed down, it was staying in second gear while the shift-knob was in neutral position

I didn't know what to do, so I drove home very slowly in second gear for about 50 miles hoping that some garage was open on sunday...

and yesss, I found one close to home, the guy over there wanted to look at my car, he pushed and pulled the gear-handle of the gearbox and finally it worked again... I was happy...

The mechanic also checked the transmission oil and according to him it was black and very thin, he adviced me to change the oil as soon as possible and he said something about checking the synchronizerring?

(What are the costs I asked him.. o just give me something he said... unbelievable nowadays.. a total stranger without demanding big money, a good example how people can be)

Does anyone of this forum ever had this problem?
and what should I do now?.. please help me out

thanks

benz

Sounds like there was something jamming the shift rod in place inside the housing of the gearbox probably gunk caused by the old oil also if you are having issues with syncro mesh then it could have got caught up because of that also.

If its all operating OK again now then maybe just get the car checked over by a good indy or an MB dealer to check for damage obviously if you are still having problems go to a dealer asap you don't want it to totally fail

Thank you, it seems to operate as normal now but..

The dealer also said to change the oil and to check the gear-rubbers below the car and to lubricate the space direct under the shiftknob?? I can see a special hole and inside it looks dry, but do I have to dissamble the whole thing with the four bolts first? or just lubricate through the plastic/pvc hole?

I would take it apart so you can get easy access to the mechanism

Ok, are there any pictures/instructions available how to dissamble the shift-console?

All the parts you need to take out should come out by hand and are just clipped into place
