| Was reading where a fella changed his battery and his car ran bad due to computer shutting down. My son had to change his battery but did not want to loose his preset radio stations so here is what we did. (course his battery was not completely dead, just too low to turn the car over. It just "clicked".) I would guess it would work for SLK's also...??? We clamped jumper cables to his Battery cables and jumped to one of our other cars. Disconnected the old battery, removed it, and put in the new Battery. Reconnected the battery cables to the battery and removed the jumper cables. SLKman

| I think there's an adapter with 9v battery attached that goes unto the cigarette lighter. This allows you to change the battery without losing radio settings. (I don't know if the key has to be left on off or in position 1 -- in MB no power goes to the cigarette lighter when the key is at off or position 0). Your method as described should work also.

| Hey, The method you posted for the 170 will work SLKman but its not a great idea to jump a modern car unless you have to and i can assure you nothing will fail or go bad on the car from disconnecting the battery you will just need to reset a few things and the instructions for them will be in the manual so if you do need to swap the battery out you can do so and totally disconnect the car from power it will be fine. Not sure about Eddy's system it will work on the 170 but i am not really sure about the 171 for a total flat i don't think 9V will be enough what you can do for both cars if you need to is take another 12V battery and connect it to the charge points under the hood then disconnect the old battery and replace it once thats done simple unhook the second battery and jobs done.

| Glad to help mate. Just a few thing's i should have added do this with the computers off so open the hood and have everything ready then let the car sit for about 5 mins then do the job that way the car will be shut down for the duration of the operation, also once the second battery is hooked up disconnect the battery to be removed as quick as possible. (Only use this trick when you are replacing the battery)

| One more trick. Most new battery chargers need feedback from the battery they are charging so they know its starting voltage to avoid over-charging, if the cars battery is flat and your charger throws an error saying there is not sufficient charge in the battery to start the charge hook up a second battery in line with the charger so you have charger-second batt-dead batt. This will trick the charger into thinking these is more juice left in the dead than there actually is and it will start to charge but check the condition of the dud every 5 mins or so and once its got enough charge remove the second battery from the loop
