Default SLK55 Oil Capacity

Been talked about before on the forums (both on AMG and reg models), but not sure I ever saw a definitive answer.

Hopeing you can look it up.

Mine is a MY 2005 SLK55 AMG, built in April '05.

My Owners manual defines Oil Capacity (w/Filter) of 8.5 US Qts (8.0liters).

As you know SLK55s do NOT have a dispstick.

When I first got my car (<100 miles) I used the diag mode to show the Oil Measurement. It showed 8.2 or 8.3 Qts each time I looked (car in same spot in the garage, sitting over night).

I monitored it thru out the last 16 months, occassionally.

It eventually got down to 6.8 Qts, but the ADD OIL indicator NEVER came on.

I just brought it in for the 10K mile maintenance with Oil and Filter change.

The paperwork says 8 qts (but I supposed they don't bother with putting exact).

The diag trick now shows 7.8 Qts (again same parking spot and after sitting all night).

So Dan some questions:

1. What is the true OIL capacity of the SLK55?
2. When filled correctly what should the diag trick show?
(i.e. why is the new oil change showing 1/2 qt lower than when I first got the car?)
3. How does MB service person know when he's got it full? (ie. do they use the diag trick also, or something else?)
4. How low does it have to drop before the Add Oil message would come on?

Hi,

Hope these help out feel free to ask anything else.

1) The max capacity for the M113.989 is 8.0 liters with filter installed and 7.5 without.

2) The diag display should show the correct amount installed with only minor differences so the 8.2/8.3 is showed you would be about correct for a max fill-up so i would suspect the reason its showing a different amount now is because it is not filled to capacity (I find this quite often with dealers just throwing in X amount of oil every time)

3) In our shop we tend to use the SDS because we can watch the display as we add oil and it shows up with only minimal delay some places use the diag display again this uses the same sensor so the delay is minimal it is also possible to use the (never mentioned by MB) dipstick. Some places simply look up the values in the WIS and then knowing the car is drained fill it to that amount it all depends on the shop to be honest with you pal.

4) With regards to the add oil message we don't have the actual values for that so i cant say for sure but i from experience its about 1.5 liters so your car does appear to have overshot it a little bit there.

Again please feel free to ask any other questions mate i will do my best to help out.

Regards
Dan

Thanks Dan.

So I guess I can say, the dealer didn't quite top it up to full on the oil change (and the original factory fill was a little "over the top").

I have to bring it back for a part that was backordered (and in now) for passenger door rattle, perhaps I'll quiz them a little on the oil fill.

Thats alright mate no problem at all.

They will tend to over fill just slightly at the factory (at AMG for the 55's) to compensate for the extra burning at the start of a cars life never enough to do it any damage but just a little over.

Good call with the dealer i bet they charged you for a full top up.
