Default R170 2K rpm vibration

Hey Dan!

I've noticed a vibration pretty much through out the car from 2000 to about 2300 rpms. Its sensed more at a stand still.

I drove a '98 SLK230 and it was a little more noticeable around 2500 rpms.

Is this indicative of the model/engine? It's definitely engine originated. It's not extremely annoying, but if there's something I can do about it, I'd like to.

Could it be that something got a bit loose and that there is a resonance effect between those rpm ?

I don't think it's in the engine itself... the vibration would get worse and worse with the rpms... till breaking point.

My main suspect would be the heat shield (next to the exhaust manifold)....

I feel it at different speeds (mph), but always in the 2000-2300 range. Beyond that it's not there. I thought it might be tire related because before replacing them, it was a lot worse. But because the vibration was so bad before replacing the tires, once I replaced them, it was almost unnoticeable until this other guy pointed it out on his. (Nice run-on, huh?)

if it was the tires, it would be a certain speeds but not at a certain rpm range (and various speeds), IMHO

Well it does not have to be the innards of the engine to cause the noise it could be a pump or a belt causing the noise or any one of the components around the e-bay.

The thing with the tires is that if these provide a better ride then the vibration's needed to start this off / allow it to vibrate more could be reduced so the noise gets harder to spot.

Could be a heat shield but i would expect that to be related more to the road the car is driving on and temperature once the bay warms up the shield will tend to be jammed into place.

This is going to sound silly but have you tested this at idle with the hood open and having a listen around and where does it actually come from?

Could be the V-Belt could be the differential so if you could tell me where the noise is from that would help loads mate i don't wanna give advice based on what i have heard on other cars in case its a different noise so clarification would ease my mind a little that we are on the same page.

I can try it with the hood open. Just need to incorporate the wife. She hates doing car maintenance stuff with me... Or maybe it's just me? ...nawaaaah

If you could try that would be great mate thanks.

Hopefully it will be possible to narrow it down to a corner of the bay or something.
