My wife really wants the SLK55 AMG.. We found a 2005 with 14,000 for around 35,000.00 (good deal???) Going to check out the car on the weekend but have few questions...
1. maintenance cost: How much do you guys spend on maintenance? Avg oil change price, break pads, and etc...
2. Any known problems?? I have a friend who has the 350 but shes telling me shes having a problem with the hardtop getting stuck...
3. How long is the warranty for the AMG? is it standard 36,000/3years? Since the car is owned by a private party will they transfer the warranty? Does MB AMG provide a extended warranty?

Welcome!
1] Maintenance is really going to depend on how you drive the car, and how good a set of tires and shoes you want on it.
2] "Stuck Tops" are pretty uncommon. Most common is a noisy top, but 99% of it can be fixed. In general, if it's a 2005 with clean history, you should be good.
3] MB is 5 years / 50k miles from "in service" date. You can get an extended warranty. Things usually don't go wrong on these cars, but when they do, they can be expensive. It's a 70k car with a 40k engine it - that should help keep things in perspective!

Succinctly put and yes it does keep things in perspective.
Just one thing to add D4vid, if you put your location on your profile it will help people to give you an answer as warranty varies for different countries. Although I assume from the price you are talking US$

Welcome to the forum
Great input - I have a 2006 (Paid $76K out the door) and have seen prices ranging from $37K to $47K with the low $40's more common. Your fifth year of warranty is either gone or coming up soon - so consider an extended warranty.

thanks for the replies so far!!! I'm from Southern California! btw how much is the oil change on the beast????? I remember paying like 50 bucks for my Lexus GX -.-
My understanding in the US is that the factory new car warranty is 48 months / 50,000 miles, not 5 yrs mentioned earlier. You can only get the MB extended warranty if the car is a MB Certified Pre Owned bought from a dealer, or you were the original owner. Otherwise you can get third party extended warranties.
Make sure you check under the front spoiler for damage. Since it's so low the AMG usually scrapes the front bumper on curbs and often it has to be fixed or replaced.
Frankly, I would never buy one of these cars or any MB without having some warranty remaining. There are many things that can go wrong, though often it is nothing major. My 2005 SLK350 was certified, but it has been back in the dealer for warranty repairs for 6 weeks+ since we got it in March. Leaks, broken headlights, broken rear view mirror, bad battery & alternator, COMAND that overheats, heated seat broken, missing proper microphone for bluetooth, glitches with the ipod connector, center console stuck, squeaks all over, etc. Each time we brought it in, they kept it for at least a week, and the latest time nearly 2.5 weeks.

It costs more for AMG SLK 171 compared to nonAMG, oil and filter is around $105. NonAMG is around $75 (I cannot recall the figures exactly).

The AMG needs oil & filter service every 10,000 miles compared to Lexus recommended 5,000 to 7,500 miles for the GX. So the cost is not much more if you look at it that way. The maint manual for my SLK350 recommends every 13,000 miles or annually if driven less, for comparison.

The 48/50,000 is what I was told last week when I bought my extended warranty, but even though I was not the original owner and it was not MB certified I was allowed to purchase the MB extended warranty, they just needed to call MB and verify my VIN. (I am guessing for any problems and maintenance info.)

It depends on the car. Sounds like a good deal, and prices have been falling lately due to the economy. Have a look on eBay, on you'll get a better idea on current asking prices...
I bought my 2005 SLK55 AMG (certified pre-owned with an additional year of warranty) in April for $44,000 with 15,000 miles on the odometer. I thought that was a good deal back then since a brand new one is 70k +. I can't believe how much prices have fallen since then.
I picked up my 2005 SLK with about 15000 miles back in May. After negotiating with the dealer my sale price was 35.5k
With tax + extended warranty and so on the total price came in over 40k. I felt like at the time I got a fairly solid deal - not amazing but not overpriced. However, with the current economy and car prices, you can definitley get cheaper then this.
Edit: This was for a SLK 350 with most options. So I think you paying similar price for a 55 reflects the market decline and struggling car industry over the last several months.
