SLK 55 AMG Speedo Cylinders

I never noticed this before but i see that the telescopic cylinders on the SLK55 AMG that the speedometre is in is in a grey colour.

What i'm wanting to know is what is it made of because in some pictures i've seen (on the pre-facelift), it looks very porous and spongy and not very solid. I've seen some pics on here of facelifted 55's and they look much better (maybe its the picture quality).

It's grey painted and rough in texture. The standard SLK is silver and smooth.
Other than the speedo design change, the surrounding cyl. are the same.
