Default trying to purchase slk55...help

Hello ya'll....(yes I'm from texas )

1st post ever...let me first say you guys are awesome. I've been lurking for a week trying to absorb as much info as possible in order to, one not embarrass myself here (i'm new to slk's) and two im trying to purchase an slk55, and you all have educated me quite a bit.

I was originally going to get an slk 350 but the dealer only had an amg in stock...so i said what the hell...lets test drive it. BIG mistake...I can't stop thinking about the roar of that amg engine now. I'm.....I'm in love...and a 350 just won't cut it. my heart wants what it wants....

So now I need your help...I just can't spot what's a deal and what's a ripoff. I just don't know enough to tell. KBB and Nada are all over the place. standard versions 43k in kbb but nada has them starting at 48K. I still haven't seen a dealer post one for under 50k.

The one I drove was an 06' blk/blk w/22000 miles on it. good condition not excellent and just standard options. had a rim that was scratched up...interior leather had some ugly scratches too but just in one area. absolutely no packages. dealer wants 51k for it...this just sounds way too high....am i wrong? what should i be looking for....besides airscarf i see that getting recommended all the time.

Can't help you with used prices in the U.S., but welcome to the site! And I know exactly what you mean about test driving the SLK55 - it's what done me in *L*.

Welcome to the frum.

You should look at Tungsters SLK32 AMG.

That bad boy has 360hp and is already tricked out with everything you could want!

Click "SLK Garage" in the blue bar at the top of the page and check out his car pics.

Here is a link to his latest post about selling it. Plus he is here in Texas!

http://www.slkworld.com/general-disc...sale-ebay.html

Good luck with whatever you buy.

Print out the NADA costs, and try surfing the internet some more, perhaps Ebay. Take your results and show them to the dealer and perhaps leverage a better price for you. I'm sure there are good deals out there. I used this method a few years ago when playing the salesperson game... Time is on your side. Good luck

Now is a good time to be purchasing many big ticket items. I agree, the SLK 55 you mentioned is way too high. If it's not the right car (color and options) don't waste your time negotiating a deal. Check all sources (eBay, Autotrader, etc) to get an idea of of used prices. Take your time, plenty of used SLKs available.

Welcome to the site. I recently had the same experience you did - had driven several 350s then found this one 55 that had the packages I wanted. At that point I wanted the AMG car and only that one.

The AMGs aren't nearly as numerous in the secondary market as the 350. There were and still are more than a dozen 350s available locally (I'm in the SF Bay Area) and only 1 or 2 55s. I shopped for about 4-5 months before finding the one I ended up buying last month.

Again, welcome to the site. I've found this place to be a great resource for information about the car, and about the friendliest car community I've seen.

Thanks for the advice guys...keep it coming. im taking it all in.

slkman...just viewed Tungster's slk and it is indeed sick. I want lsd doors on mine as too. if it were of the r171 body style I'd prob make a move on it. Oh...and glad to see there is some houston representation here. i'm in houston too.

I've seen a couple amg's pop up in the last two weeks are so here in houston. and they are lasting about a week on average before getting sold. there was an loaded 07 slk55 with 11k miles on it that sold for 50k recently....exactly what i wanted .....steal right??...BUT carfax had an accident report on it and it scared me off...so even the ones without clean records appear to move rather quick.

Billh...I have no idea how you lasted 5 months.

Welcome Hell Raiser from a fellow Texan. Baytown to be exact so we're right next door. Keep your eye on MB of Houston North on 45 & 1960. I've bought a couple of Benzs from them and they shoot pretty straight. They usually have more AMGs on their lot, both new and used, than the other Houston dealers. You won't be sorry for buying the 55. Once you're hooked, we're going to expect a little participation from you at Texas World Speedway. This is a perfect track for the SLK 55. There are a couple of us on this forum with 171 55's that run there regularly. Check out the video section. I've got several posts to show you what you're missing.
Happy hunting.

Great to have another Texan here! I was totally sold on my 55 when I downshifted and goosed her a little on the highway, she just purred and I was hooked

Good luck in your search

I suspect I'm in trouble as well - I was going to "settle" for a 350, but now it looks like the AMG route for me as well. And billh556, you are killing me! I've "decided" that I want storm red with beige interior - which is evidently the most unpopular combo given the fact NO ONE seems to have one except members here who aren't selling 'em!!

Dan recently commented on the unusual mirror treatment. While it isn't the way I would have ordered the car, they are kind of growing on me after 3 weeks of ownership. Kind of like the way Audi does S4 setups...

I was looking at a beautiful mocha designo 06 350 with the AMG package, and especially liked the interior on that car. But that car didn't drive "right," and I suspect it may have been in an accident at some point. But then I checked out the car I ended up buying. I was trying to remain non-committal while negotiating with the dealer, saying there were others I was strongly interested in. That was true... until I'd seen and driven this car.

Can you get specific information on what type of accident damage? Anything more than something minor would kill the deal for me.

Tempting as it is, I would stay away from it. The problem in my eyes could be unseen damage.

Ok, absolutely nothing new has turned up in Houston regarding slk amgs. I'm considering buying from out of state especially since I've noticed a few deals on ebay on a few of them. Any advice? Sight unseen makes me uncomfortable but I'm not seeing any other options. Or should I try to wait it out?

There are plenty of these out there, just depends on how selective you are when it comes to color, options, and money.
I picked up an 06 with ALL options, 5k miles for $43000. Shipping is fairly reasonable as well. Good luck!

good luck with your search. i also like to get the actual service records if possible before buying anything not new. Case in point, i was looking at a rubicon wrangler (mud puppy) and sure enough, waiting and then checking those records turned me away from making most likely, a big mistake. Great to see you doing your homework. ebay, autotrader, cars dot com-- good places to start. good luck!

Hey HR you may want to check Autotrader online. I bought my 07 last year there used and saved a lot of money. I did fly to another state to pick it up but it was definately worth it. E-bay has some good deals sometimes and another place you may want to check in Luxurymotors.com thay tend to have pretty good prices there too.
