New to the board!

Just got my mint 2006 SLK 55. Caspian blue. It has the P30. Actually it has every option. 18,000 miles and under $50K. It is a rocket. But I am not so knowledgeable as to tell you if the P30 is a plus or a minus. I actually would want to know though. I heard the SLK 63 will be coming out in M.Y. 2009 so it will be a decision I might have to make then. Someone told me that while the rims are heavy, in 2008 models the stock brakes are smaller and the larger brakes that come with the P30 make it worth it.

Hi,

The P30 in my personal view is a minus on all models upto 08 and then it becomes marginal.

The way i see it the slightly larger disks on the P30 don't overcome the heavy ass wheels so the stopping distance is probably about the same and the acceleration is slightly reduced.

On 08's the brakes become a big plus but you still have the wheels in the way and an upgrade to 07 brakes would be about the same price as the P30 perhaps even cheaper.

Still only minor issues on an otherwise great car

Don't worry about the 63 mate still the 55 for 09

2006 SLK 55, all options to include P30, under $50k. Great deal and the P30 would be a big plus, just for potential resell. For the money you spent, you could easily spend a little extra for some top quality, low weigh wheels, if you dislike the factory 030 wheels or weight was an issue. Welcome to SLKWorld. How about a few pics!

Thanks FishtailinZ and all. I'm gonna try to get my old Nikon out and take some pics over the weekend. gotta wax it first.

As far as changing the rims. I don't race... really, how much faster could i get? .3 seconds in a 1/4 mile? i don't know if that makes it worth the big investment. I could use that money for removing the resonator, putting in X-pipes, blower upgrade, underdrive pulley, Renntech chip and green filters( I have been paying attention) Although I have NO idea how much all that would cost.....but man, are there some beautiful rims out there.... wouldn't the next buyer rather see factory P30 rims? hmmmm.

Your looking at a slight increase in accleration and a decrease in stopping distance without the P30 wheels.

pretty much all of those minus the blower upgrade, which is lota $ will be about the same as 3g set of rims from like hre or something. But you dont have to go that expensive.

well. i must be interpreting this all wrong. all those tuner changes seemed like they would add around 30-40+ H.P. are you saying that the P30 rims are so heavy that the car uses 30+ H.P. just to push them forward?

and for speculation sake, would a future buyer of my car be unhappy I replaced the factory P30 rims?

No no not at all hell no, as for the exact amount of power needed extra I'm not sure but they are unsprung weight.

I'm just trying to point out the difference between power and performance, instead of trying to shove power into the engine and in doing so void its warranty when you can go for things like lightweight wheels and gain performance that way with your warranty intact.

Just because you replace the P30 alloys does not mean to have to trash them, store them somewhere then stick them back on when you sell the car.

Its one thing tuning a car if you plan on keeping it but if i was buying your car i would be considerably less concerned about different alloys than i would be engine mods.

New alloys say to me that you don't like the factory ones and to give your car a quick check to be sure everything else is factory, a modded engine says you like to thrash the car and then i think about serviceability issues.

Now i work for Merc so i know the 113 is a strong engine but your average Joe don't know that, and i have modded my cars engine but i don't plan on ever selling the car.

For the value of your car to stay you need dealer or MB indy stamps in your book and an intact warranty.

I do have both the 030 package and a separate set of the 16-spoke AMG rims that come on the 2006 SLK 55 without the 030 package. That's right, two sets of rims and tires AND the 030 package. I'm quite happy with my setup. I don't plan on tracking the car. I do plan on keeping it for a very long time (as long as I last).

Porsche to benz, interms of tuners its the same thing with Porsche where Ruf is more desirable in the second hand market when compared to other tuner such as techart, sportec and gemballa.

Whilst for Mercedes, Renntech, Brabus and Kleemann are the one's that are more desirable from my point of view and other people's perspective. A blower is a nice upgrade but it costs alot, not sure how much they go for now but last time I checked the Supercharger itself goes around 15,000 dollars.

Ahhh. I understand...Thanks again. So now the question: which rims? I just saw new rims on mbworld, 360 forged CF.5 Carbon Fiber rims. looked pretty cool. Plus they are in south florida as I am.....I was actually thinking of a new thread poll on what non factory rims do people have? Exciting stuff.

Dan, BTW, how did your car turn out following its "spine adjustment"? Did you reinforce it and is it all back together and functioning?

Its looking fine thank you, our rig shows its all straight now also so thats good.

Its got basically a second frame that does a loop around the underside of the car and it has a loop over the car's mid point at the back of the tranny then over the torque converter up the frame into the engine bay upto the mounts for the X member.

It goes to the underside of the engine mounts and the tranny bolts onto it as well as the original chassis.

Kinda like a rectangle shape with a few loops, about the shape of a bare chassis and its welded on for the majority of its length most of the cars structure is rectangular and this is round so it sits in the frame just perfect.

Its mostly put back together i just need to add some cosmetics, totally drivable at the moment.

pictures of your frame job. What an undertaking! I'm not at all capable of doing something like that or ever likely to need such work done but I would like to see how you did it.....
