First one I have ever seen other than mine. Didn't get a good look but it was silver and pretty.

I guess there aren't a ton of r171 out there but so far I think I have only seen 2-3 slk280/350 and this one slk55.

Just don't see many SLKs in this area. I see more R170s than R171s. There's a SLK 280 somewhere in my neighborhood. Regardless, whenever I see one, I always wave.

In Hong Kong, there are quite a number of SLK200 & SLK350, but not many SLK280. Also, I rarely see a SLK55, maybe it's too expensive.

There is also a SLK Black Series on sale, which costs US$237K...

I do think my local dealer has a white 280. I never really looked at new SLK's but I think sticker on it was over $50k USD and it didn't even have the AMG sport kit or whatever it is called.

I'm the opposite, I rarely look at used cars, prefer new but lately I've been looking at used and you can't find a better deal. Slightly used SLK55 are cheaper than brand new SLK350's. I can't believe it.

My brother said he read an article that AMG might be making manuals, anyone here read this or can confirm this rumor? If so, I'm on the waiting list.

Manual for the 55.... I'll pass. That engine races to redline so quickly, you'd need to reduce it from 7 speeds to 5. Plus, just imagine how tough that clutch pedal has to be and how often you'd have to replace the clutch itself. On the Enzo, you'd have to replace the clutch after just 2 hard core accellerations. I don't even think a clutch on the Acura NSX lasts more than 2k miles. The SLK55 would always be in the shop!

They seem to make LS1 and other 400whp clutches last over 40k miles. I don't see why it would be a problem.

I agree. It would interesting the number of those that would opt for a manual SLK 55/63 if it were available. I'd be second in line behind Ynot.

Not exactly, VitaminT took my example. The corvette dynoed at 530 plus at the crank and it doesn't have clutch problems. They can easily do it. MB doesn't think there's a market for it, boy are they wrong, alot of people like the look of the SLK but end up buying a boxster or Z4 for the manuals. I'm a regular on the bmw forums and everytime I login someone buys the Z4M over the SLK b/c of the manual trans. Same with Porsche owners. I've been thinking about getting a 55 for awhile (I didn't realize CPO ones, with low miles are so cheap) just b/c they are so affordable.

I've talked to my brother about it and he laughs, b/c he said I would trade the 55 for something else if I did get it. If I want to drive something fast, he said to talk his Turbo M3 out. I'm still hoping and praying that the SLK63 will have that option. I'll definately be on that list. Back when I ordered my 350, I think I had a thread regarding possibly getting the black/red SLK55 b/c it was only 2K more (I can't even get a set of nice wheels for that) but passed on it, I don't regret it.

Trust me the numbers would be staggering but that might not be a good thing, supply and demand will cause the price to go up, and you will not be as exclusive. You can't beat the price, performance and pure joy that this vehicle brings.

I live in the Bay Area and I have only seen a 350 and a 280 ever since I bought my car. However I have seen at least 4 SL close to my neighborhood and 1 of them is SL55 AMG.

I drove the Boxster S with a manual... it just doesn't have any balls when you compare it to the SLK55. So I didn't go for the Porsche, even though it had a manual. The SLK350 with a manual is probably a better match to the Boxster anyway. The Z4 is just plain vulgar. I used to be a die-hard BMW enthusiast. Now I'm simply disgusted by their deisgns and their cost-cutting efforts. The 6-series has a cardboard floor in the trunk for Pete's sake. That's cheap, not weight-saving. The last car I had with a cardboad floor in the trunk was a 1984 Honda Accord, my first car, and last Honda.

What does interest me is the Alfa Spider due 2008. That should be fun. It will be slow version of the ***y SLK. Which is a really weird move for Italy.

An SLK55 with a manual is something that I don't think I could put up with as a daily driver. If I used it for the weekends, I don't think I could change gears fast enough.

Well, I totally agree with you. In my opinion, I think the SLK55 is a luxury sport car which gives you an agressive sporty exterior, along with a comfort luxury interior for daily drive. If someone is just going for speed, he should go for the subaru STI with manual which is even faster than the SLK55.

I think, if I could afford one, that I would go with a manual. I just got done driving my RSX with a stick for 4 years and didn't really mind it at all. Granted we don't have really bad stop and go traffic here but I found it gratafying. But with all that said, I still really enjoy the 55's 7sp now. Especially in sport mode it is always chomping at the bit ready to down shift when called apon. I also like how if driving spirited it will hold the gear while turning so it it ready to go again when you get back on the gas.

I read a review that said something like, overachieving auto...still not a stick and I think that is exactly how I feel. It is by far the best auto I have ever driven and will probably ever drive.

No DSG option?

a stock wrx STI would be hard pressed to beat the SLK 55 in straight line. most quotes are around 4.7-4.9 0-60 mph, while the 55 is 4.3-4.5.

I think AMG will release some sort of DSG/SMG transmission instead of a traditional manual, they shift faster and last longer, AND can be turned into an automatic through electronics.

Honestly I cant see MB releasing a manual transmition on their Current AMG lineup.

Instead of a manual, I would like an automated dual-clutch transmission like SMG, DSG, or F1. Its not nearly as smooth as a real automatic, but shifts a lot faster. What I don't like about the SLK55 is the delay between the time you hit the shift buttom and the actual shift.. it seems like its taking forever sometimes. On the other hand, it can work perfectly smooth in normal driving, which SMG simply cannot do. Unfortunately, you can't really have both...


There is a thread on mbworld of SLK350 beating an STI from a roll, which is really a better match for it. SLK55 is on a whole other performance level and would absolutely destroy the STI from any speed period. SLK55 weighs about the same, but has 60hp and 75lb-ft torque advantage, at much lower rpm's with better gearing and RWD. High 12's VS mid 13's in the 1/4 mile... its really a no brainer. Even with 400hp tuned STI (chip + bolt on's), SLK55 would definitely take it from a roll. AWD does not accelerate nearly as hard from a roll as RWD, it would need 450hp to keep up from 120mph+.

i see you guys talking about manuals. an AMG tuned benz is supposed to be a luxury vehicle that is supposed to be comfortable/easy to drive, while performing at a high level. i dont see how a manual transmission would be anything related to luxury or comfort. there is no point of having a manual transmission when a good automatic gearbox could achieve equal or better numbers. why go through the hassle? for an example the automatic on the porsche 997 turbo actually outperforms it's manual counterpart by 3/10 of second from 0 - 60 . (3.4 with auto, 3.7 with manual) and plus most ferraris and lambos sold thesedays have the paddle shift automatic (or they call them e-gear/f1 paddle shift). there would be no point to have a manual AMG benz. the whole point of AMG is to perform at a high level without sacrificing the comfort.
