I tried hold the stick to the left and letting it select the right gear, stomped the pedal and it downshifted another. I guess it gets it close to the right gear.

Not sure i quite understand your post mate, does your 06 allow you to pre-select the gears like the first 55's and the non-AMG's can or do you have to let it select a gear then change again?

My late 05 SLK does not allow for me to change more than one gear at a time and neither does the 06 SL, will have to have another read of the docs i am sure they say it was removed even before the 05 run was finished.

Did you put the car into kickdown? because they are different modes, press and hold the shifter across the the left and you select what it thinks is the most efficient gear to pull away with it also restricts the shift mode to that gear.

Kickdown shifts to the lowest possible gear.

Its on the M mode in AMG's mate.

I think the feature is included on the standard 7G

Sorry, let me clarify.

If I'm driving in 6th gear and want to downshift to say 3rd gear, I can either:

1) Press the lever left for a couple seconds, the car will downshift directly into the most aggressive gear for that speed

2) Tap left, downshift to 5th, once 5th is engaged, repeat process until I get to 3rd gear.

Dont get ahead of your selves guys. I think a 400HP STI would be fair game for the SLK55, it would be a even match. Its not all about brute power because the sti you have to remember has a higher engine and piston speed. A stock STI However would loose, but not by to much, kinda like if you raced a R170 230 against a R171 280.

A 6 speed manual would be ok but I would prefer a flappy paddle gearbox that shifts around 15milliseconds which is right around DSG and Ferrari's F1 Gearbox.

I didn't think we where debating speeds or comparing vehicles just talking about the gearbox?

I think the STI comments were mentioned around post #16.

On that note:
I have a good friend with a tuned 400hp STI.

Stock, we would launch about the same. STI with AWD vs SLK55 with more torque made them fairly equal off the line then the SLK55 would start pulling. On a roll, SLK hands down.

400HP STI is a different story. He gets me off the line everytime. I usually stay about a car length behind until around 95-100mph. Then I reel him and and start pulling hard. Our 1/4 times are probably fairly close, I would bet I'm just a little quicker (time). However, I'm probably quite a bit faster trap speed. STI's are not geared for top speed.

a stock STi would lose badly to a stock SLK55 from a dead stop. but even more on the highway.
