Having hard time choosing 2006 or 2007 slk55. My question is does the paddles make a difference on the 2007 does anyone not like the button shifting on the 2006? Will this make a difference to me?

Paddles are nicer imo and Ive experienced both but its an easy retrofit so its not a deal breaker. The costs varies from about £100 to retro the paddles on to your wheel and is 4 hrs work for a good diyer. Currently I run a paddle converted 2005 wheel but Im just about to replace with the 2009 030 wheel because C200 got one and led me astray plus I wanted to get one while you still can.
Oh fitting the wheel is a piece of cake if you just buy a late wheel and fit it but in US not cheap i believe.

Yes and yes - it's just not a cheap proposition to pick up the 030 steering wheel. You can retro fit paddles to pretty much any wheel, some take more fiddling than others...
Honestly - don't find that I use them *that* often - buttons or paddles...

paddles/buttons.....
i have paddles and have said on here before find them to slow to use.
if i'm in the mood to drive in M mode, i always use the shift lever, as that changes gear instantly, i find with the paddles some times it takes 3 tugs of the paddle to get it to upshift....

Steve
Hmm, that's weird - it's the same CAN signal to UP / DOWN shift regardless - maybe the microswitches on your paddles are going bad?

I have also discovered that when I use the paddles there is a "lag" moment where the car waits to shift - therefore I mostly use the gear shift in M mode. Is this normal or something I should have checked out? It's not an instant shift when using the paddles, and sometimes it shifts quite hard.

I'll defer to DansSlk, but looking at the schematics, there's no difference in the CAN signal generated when you shift with the paddles/buttons than the one generated with the shift lever, so as far as I can tell, there should be no difference between the two.
I rarely use the shift lever, but I'll have a play as I'm out and about this week to see if I can notice a difference...

You and me both. The last SLK55 I had (3 years ago) used to annoy me in a similar manner. In fact, one of my major (albeit relatively minor in the context of the car as a whole) problems with this car IS the irritating manner in which the gearbox in M mode (i.e. the very mode where one IS supposedly most in control of the box....) takes a second or two to change after one has hit the button/paddle.... The contrast between the car in this regard and something like the Z4 35i with DCT is MASSIVE - the Z changes the INSTANT one hits the paddle. Don't get me wrong; I still love the SLK55, but I do know what Davids88keys means in his above posting, and it is one of the few reasons why I chose to move the previous SLK55 on as quickly as I did. Still lovin that V8 though.........
i purchased the 07 55 partly due to the paddles... i also was told somewhere on here that there are other differences b/w the 07 and pre-07's (brakes maybe?).
i also agree with the lag time. i use the paddles quite a bit and there is definitely times where it lags. I also have noticed that the stick is much much more responsive than the paddles (as reported above).
EDIT: I have the car @ MB for some warranty work and brought up the laggy paddle shift issue. They are looking into it. I will update as soon as I pick up the car tonight.
EDIT: MB said the lag from the flappy paddles is normal.
