Default Is it me, or...

Is it me or does the new 2009 SL look god awful? The hood bulges don't match the grill, which interrupts the flow of the window sills... which then give away the fact that MB hasn't even bothered with the back-end. The car looks strictly as if it was designed to accommodate EU pedestrian safety standards.

And on this point, it makes the SLK look so much better. The R170 has better lines than the new SL, especially the SLK32's hood bulges.

The R171, in my opinion, will go down in the books 30-40 years from now as "they don't make them as beautiful as that anymore." Just like the Jaguar E-type.

Or am I alone on this, or all we all crazy?

I loved my SLK 320. But I like the SLK 350 a LOT more. Of course we are all biased, but I agree that it is a GREAT car.

The picture I saw in the MB newsletter in my email a few days ago looked god awful. I looked at pictures of it before, and didn't recall thinking it was THAT bad. Maybe this is just a terrible picture.

Its a terrible picture and I was astonished when I saw the SL in front of me the car looks very nice and will go down in history as the SL pagoda successor due to its tall headlights.

The grille which has a 1960's SL design and even the hood which has the Bulges that resemble the hood of the 300SL Roadster and Gullwing models, if I were to get one the SL63 is highly impressive with the launch control and 7 Speedshift G-tronic which shifts faster than the 7Gtronic found on cars that are built from 2005-2008.

Enthusiasts who crave for torque which was derived in an mad way from the M113 EVO K engine found in the likes of the E-class, G, CLS and SL are all saddened that it is no longer available but even if this model has torque deficiency of 90tq I say nothing like a Kleemann kit with Ecu update, Headers + Downpipes wont improve and with the likes of the charcoal filters removed, green filters and x pipe it will be very very fast for its weight.

I drove a 997 turbo yesterday and I would love to own one but you see, there is something about that car that doesnt fit or lets say suite my personality. The interior is great and filled with carbon fiber, leather, alluminium and many contrasting items such as yellow stitching but there is something about that car that didnt keep me feel acquainted. Now if I had to drive the SL I would really feel good in it as its meant to fit me well because I truly adore GT cars such as the Maserati new coupe, Jaguar's, Astons and the list goes on.

Well I just have to say that the same thing applies to many cars and when the first time the public so the R171 they said its too cute and not too wide enough.

Yeah its not so bad when your looking at it in person, especially the AMG.

BUT its not the 230 of old, that car will go down in history as one of the most beautiful SL's ever designed since you can look at her from any angle and she's pretty.

The 171 has beautiful lines and the ass end is gorgeous as are the side panels, i don't know anybody who does not like the SLK from those angles but the front is love or hate, that SL was acceptable from any angle a real beauty.

Her facelift is more in your face I'm a big angry Mercedes and if you don't get the hell off my road I'm going to eat you whereas the pre-facelift was just so graceful and understated.

that is very correct so dan. for some marketing reason, all auto manufacturers promote this angry/bad/i dare say evil in many cases look, as such a design apparently appeals more to worldwide clientele.

I've got first hand experience as I truly adore this place, I go there nearly every year for 3 days as the beach, the cars and the environment/atmosphere is like being in a billionaires club. I like to look at the rare and exquisite cars and dine at the best restaurants as I also like the steaks they serve at Cafe Hotel de Paris with the poivre et verte sauce.

Bit OT, but last time I went, I remember going to a nightclub called Jimmy'z. That place was EXPENSIVE....beers and basic drinks were 28 or 30 euros each, and champagne was super expensive..something like 1000 or something stupid like that.. But man, was that place fun...some rich dude was sprayin some of that uber expensive champagne all over the place....hot babes everywhere, lots of Mafia looking types.

I remember walking out of the club late and waiting for a cab(which never came) and while waiting just watching the valet pull all the cars out... pretty much every car was a Ferrari, Porsche, Lambo, Jag, all the usual suspects..fun times

I had a funny moment as well, I remember waiting and princess grace station and waiting for a cab and at the time I wanted to REALY got to the toilet and then after 15 minutes I decided to walk back to the yacht which took another 45 minutes of my time.

I dont think so, its for everybody if a person can financially afford i. If the SL was for those who are at the age of 35 and above, doesnt that seem to limit the SLK owners to people ranging from 18-35 years of age because there are owners over here who are 50 and above and enjoy their slk's more than I do on a daily basis.

More like only older folks can afford. I like the previous SL a lot, I think it's still one of the best looking cars on the road, it's not too outrageous, very classy but agree that it doesn't look right with a young guy in the driver's seat. The current model has a more aggressive look, will probably appear to younger guys that can afford it. The current model looks alright to me, the previous model had a long and successful run, it was time for a change.

You haven't caused a flame but you cannot generalize that its for the elderly or people above 35, both the SLK and SL have people who are around 35 years old driving them in their marketing brochures and campaigns.
