To mtiede - i think thats only partly true, fair enough it doesn't need a TV on the underside of the hood nor does it need speakers so powerful they can make your filling's tap dance and the only car's that need to playback DVD movies are big model's like the E, S and Maybach (to be fair here the DVD vid function in the SLK is probably only from the shared E software and not something MB actually think we need) nor are we asking for those features BUT it's nice to be able to have a decent sound system that can produce nice clean sounds and accept the popular formats/inputs of the day.
MB have the clean sounds thing down (perhaps not the best they can do in the SLK but it's still very good and MB can create something fabulous when they want) but much like you would not buy a car stereo that only offers a tape deck anymore the CD on the move is on it's way out and its being replaced by portable devices such as the iPod.
Obviously they can't give full integration to every device on the market but the iPod is one of the most popular and for those who use other devices a high capacity USB stick can hold some large music library's without the hassle of swapping CD's and in some cases DVDs.
To not offer some sort of well thought out integration for solid state devices in today's market is no different to only offering a tape deck when the CD was king.
