While reading this thread, Mrs F remarked on a story about the local garage owner when she was a kid: Sybill Lupp. First kiwi female A grade mechanic and racing driver. She only did Jags (pity). Sybill used to get factory vehicles from the UK, drive them once, then tell her mechanics to do all sorts of stuff becuase they weren't going fast enough; this was a women in her 60's.
She got caught on a long straight stretch in NZ (Foxton Straights) doing 230kmh (limit is 100k, strictly enforced). She went to court for this and was facing a loss of license, when asked bythe judge if she knew what speed she was doing, she replied "of course I did, young boy, I was braking at that point!" Didn't lose her license and the case against her was thrown out. She was close to 70yo at that point. |
