I've been told that this is common mit German cars. The windows have a "soft" composition to them so that when they are hit with an object, the glass absorbs the impact while it deflects. On most other cars, the glass is harder. On the "hard" glass, an object is more likely to cause starbursts and hairline fractures, forcing you to replace the glass. This somehow makes life easier on the Autobahn, so I don't question it.
