I believe the optical fiber itself is the same and just the data standard it runs is different but its not so much the fiber itself thats the problem because of the SLK's Phone and Navi systems being in the trunk the necessary fiber is already there and you can buy small extensions from MB to hook up devices.
The problem is you would not be able to have a strand that long without repeaters because the fiber runs around the car in a loop you would be going from the front to the back and then to the front again and you would start getting signal degradation so you would buy a small adapter from MB to join the loop where you removed the changer and as i mentioned above open the loop and insert MB's extension in the trunk.
